Any opinions on Forrest?

I really wouldn’t. The first thing people will think of is Forrest Gump. And just in case you aren’t aware, the character Forrest Gump is named after Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was a leader of the KKK and a general in the Confederate Army.

Pinkblueberry · 29/05/2020 15:18

I do get the Forrest Gump reference but hope by the time they're older it wouldn't be as widely known in their generation.

The film is over 25 years old and everyone still immediately thinks of that... it’s not going to stop anytime soon.

elp30 · 29/05/2020 15:30

@MadameMinimes

I came on here to say just that! It's not a good idea!

diddlediddle · 29/05/2020 16:34

The one I know has had lots of positive feedback about it and no one gives a toss about Forrest Gump 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mucklowe · 30/05/2020 08:45

It's the sort of hipstery name SJ Strum would suggest.

MeganChips · 30/05/2020 08:52

I know of one who is about 10. He does get the occasional Forrest Gump reference but only ever from adults. Never from his peers, to them it’s just his name.

I really like it.

wowfudge · 30/05/2020 08:53

No idea whereabouts you are but Forrest, with that spelling, is the name of a recruitment agency in Cheshire so it would be a no from me.

Tonz · 30/05/2020 09:01

First thing I thought of was Forrest Bonderant, Tom Hardy character in Lawless, he named his own kid Forrest after it. I like it

mwahahahaha · 30/05/2020 13:06

Pinkblueberry I understand your point but I disagree.
It might be over 25 years old but the people that reference it are the people that grew up watching it.
I don't hear younger people referencing it tbh. But I could be wrong.

Sorry OP, but I think you underestimate the longevity of Forrest Gump. It is one of those films that has crossed over into general culture. I made a reference to it when teaching once and was surprised at how many of the kids knew about it, either from seeing it themselves or from the many many memes it has spawned.

Pinkblueberry · 30/05/2020 20:39

‘Life is like a box of chocolates...’ you don’t need to have even seen the film to know the end of this sentence or to know the name Forrest Gump. It’s still shown on the TV now fairly regularly, people are still growing up with it. As Thanks says it’s even common in internet memes so I agree you are underestimating it’s longevity.
That’s not to say you shouldn’t use the name if you like it - just don’t be in denial about the Gump association. People will make it.

Marcipex · 30/05/2020 21:25

Run Forrest run (sigh)

It’s a nice name though.

babynamelover · 30/05/2020 21:32

Totally usable I prefer Forest. Nature names are awesome 😊.

FizzyGreenWater · 30/05/2020 22:53

Oh horrible. Not only a life of Forrest Gump jokes but it also reminds me of the pro-smoking campaign group (yes pro, and they are still going!) FOREST (freedom for the right to enjoy smoking tobacco)

🤮

IloveParmaViolets · 31/05/2020 07:26

The kid has to go to secondary school so it's a no from me. Kids can be horrendously brutal. Do you have any other names that you like?

SoberCurious · 31/05/2020 07:44

What about Bear or River or Wolf?

emilybrontescorsett · 31/05/2020 09:40

Gump.

unbelievablei · 31/05/2020 15:07

I like River but I thought it was a girls name?
Anyway this discussion was only figurative in case our next one is a boy. Thinking it's a no for Forrest sadly!

Panticles · 31/05/2020 15:11

Other tree name?
Rowan
Ash
Asa

KatherineJaneway · 31/05/2020 15:15

Forrest Gump is a classic. You're wishful thinking that he won't have the whole 'run Forrest run' and the chocolates quote follow him throughout his life.
