Oliver or Alexander

Can't chose between these two names. I know both are quite common andOliver is the most popular name but I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make day to day. Do you come across lots of one or the other? Both go equally well with our surname n I like both nicknames.

Which do you prefer and why?

Definitely Alexander.

herecomesgeralt · 27/05/2020 10:57

I love Alexander, and the nickname Ali.

Grufallosfriends · 27/05/2020 12:22

Both very very popular and widely used already.

Therefore half the posters will favour Alexander while the other half will favour Oliver! Grin

Personally I'm not keen on either and I hope you have a less common surname.

SnowdropFox · 27/05/2020 12:25

I'd go with Alexander as it has more nn options. Alex, Xander, Sandy, Ek etc.

Grufallosfriends · 27/05/2020 13:09

Ek Confused

SoftBlocks · 27/05/2020 13:11

Definitely Alexander.

RowenaRavenclawTheSecond · 27/05/2020 13:21

Can honestly say I've never met an Ek Grin

Destroyedpeople · 27/05/2020 13:23

Alexander. 'Ollie' just sounds a bit wet tbh.

We spell it Eck round my way. Grin
Took · 27/05/2020 13:46

Oh and Alexander is 826254% nicer, imo, than Oliver.

Mumek · 27/05/2020 13:48

Without a doubt - Alexander.

123Dancewithme · 27/05/2020 14:40

Alexander

madcatladyforever · 27/05/2020 14:44

I like both but they are going to be shortened and I think Alex sounds nicer than Olly.

Whatsyourflava · 27/05/2020 14:46

Love both. Don't know any babies with either name, Oliver no where near doing the annual numbers it used to do if you look at the official ONS statistics

squirrelnutkinned · 27/05/2020 14:51

Thank you for your votes! Wow Alexander seems to be the runaway favourite!

Never heard of Ek as a nickname?!

I like both Alex and Ollie as shortened forms, they're friendly.

So what's it to be, Alexander or Oliver? It's so nice to find someone going for a classic sort of name.

SnowdropFox · 27/05/2020 17:10

Eck is probably the correct spelling, I knew one in school. Did not like him but doesn't put me off the name. Maybe Eck is a central Scotland thing? Comes from nn Alec.

squirrelnutkinned · 27/05/2020 19:51

I think we are leaning towards Alexander. DH prefers Oliver but I prefer Alexander.

Alexander.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 27/05/2020 21:20

DH prefers Oliver but I prefer Alexander.

Perhaps you could find a name you both love?

squirrelnutkinned · 27/05/2020 21:21

It's only a slight thing! We both love both.

finallychangedmyusername · 27/05/2020 22:41

Both are really great names. Oliver is VERY popular though, and has been for years now so for that reason I'd vote Alexander. I know 8 Olivers I can list without too much trouble but only 2 Alexanders.

If you were willing to go for something a but more obscure, Oleander sort of combines both names.
