Girls names that cannot be shortened/nicknamed

I am looking for a list of girls names that wouldn't normally be shortened or automatically have a nickname. I know some people will just make up a nickname for her, but I just want her to be called what we name her as much as possible.

We already have a girl, Heather, so we like slightly older names, classic, not massively popular (so no top 10 names) or too modern.

Sorry. I know I am asking for a lot. DH says I am too fussy.

I don't like names that can be shortened, our daughter is called Rose

TigerQuoll · 21/05/2020 22:36

@ElectricTonight I am Erin and I got called Ez or Ezza at school

Kids always find a nickname. My neighbours kid is called Amber. Older brother calls her Amburger 🤷‍♀️

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 21/05/2020 22:43

You’d be better off doing the opposite, choosing a name with a shortened version which you DO like. For example, Jessica to Jess. It’s going to get shortened. My name is impossible to shorten so I just got called any random shit, so in my teens I chose my own name, and stuck with it into adult hood.

LiviLoggs · 21/05/2020 23:44

I’m an Anna and it has never once been shortened for me but I suppose you could have Annie if someone was desperate but it doesn’t change much - still two syllables!

Winter (although I do know of a Winnie) so maybe not

Kind of going down a nature theme!
I guess if someone is really desperate you can give nicknames my best friends daughter is Ava but she’s turned into an Ava - ly
And as a PP said Brookes are often Brookey etc.

I have an Ella - in part as I wanted a no abbreviation name.

Her school friends call her Elspeth! A teacher got it wrong and started an affectionate nickname.

You can't win!

Maduixa · 22/05/2020 07:55

My sister is a Blair, which worked pretty well - can't really shorten, and Blairie, Blairsie etc. are hard to say. (She did get called Bee for a while at school - but since her circle also included See, Pee, and Ess that was probably inevitable.)

I am also a Heather - named one part because Mum didn't want a name that could be shortened. But over the years people have referred to me as H, Heth, Hey and Hev. (Their choice not mine.)

Not convinced there are many names out there that meet the 'no nickname' criteria.

AdvoCat · 22/05/2020 08:29

I think sadly us humans are lazy and we say the shortest name possible. Even a two syllable name will become a one syllable name, certainly amongst kids in school, even if you stick to the full name from home. I think the only way around that is a one syllable name. In my list posted previously, it contained my name, my sisters name and my cousins name and none of us have ever had our names shorted or had any nicknames. I hope that helps. A one syllable name would usually only result in a nn or pet name (which is less probable) rather than an abbreviation of the full name.

There are possible nicknames for every name. Just choose one you like, and live with it. You can't control what others call her.
