Hello naming gurus

I am coming out of long-term lurking to post a thread, so it's getting serious Smile

Don't know gender. We have a DS named Alexander NN Xander and if baby no 2 is a boy will probably be Joshua. Girls name is proving tricky though. Surname is one syllable, similar to Bean.

Me and DH both love Astrid, but as we live in a fairly working class town the poor child would probably get lots of "Ass" related nicknames through school, so this has more potential as a middle name.

We had provisionally said Hannah or Lyra, but I'm getting cold feet with both. Other names we had considered were

Ophelia (love it but feels a bit frilly)
Liliana (DH likes this but I don't)
Zara (I like this but DH doesn't!)

Give us some options oh wise Mumsnetters!

I really like both Hannah and Lyra. Not sure Astrid would work as a mn for Lyra though.

Hannah Astrid Bean gets my vote. I wouldn't look any further!

SnowdropFox · 20/05/2020 12:14

Oh and if you are worried about Astrid and Ass I'd rule out Ophilia as "I'll feel ya" a bit of a stretch but I cant unhear it now!

@MerryPops Of your list I love Hannah. I’m personally not generally as keen on longer super frilly sounding names, but Ophelia is lovely, however we have a drag queen in our area called Ophelia Ballz so I always have that association 😂 it is a beautiful name though and other people won’t have that association, and not as well used as the similar sounding Amelia. How about Lilia? Lucia, Eliza, Ottilia, Eloisa, Gabriela, Graciela, Erika, Freya, Luna, Seraphina, Luella, Mila. Lyra is pretty too.

Anthilda · 20/05/2020 12:31

What about Sara, rather than Zara?

Edenember · 20/05/2020 12:31

Also Rosina. I met a little girl called this once she was named after her grandma and I thought that was lovely, you could look at the little one and at her grandmother totally different generations and the name suited both equally.

Lila, Lyla ?

Similar to Lyra which I really like

LotusClover · 20/05/2020 12:42

I really dislike Astrid. Not keen on Hannah either, it's a bit dated. Ophelia is too fancy for me.

I love Lyra and Zara. Lilliana is my favourite but I would spell it with two L's.

How about:

Chloe
Lana
Aria
Sienna
Carly
Anya
Heidi
Elsa
Maeve
Flora
Esme
Tiana
Rosa
Amber
Clara
Sadie

Hannah is the nicest on the list.

daisypond · 20/05/2020 12:53

Hannah is fine but too dull. I love Anna, though.
Lyra is nice enough - after the book character. But the name itself seems a bit bland to me.
Ophelia is horrid. Mad drowned girl, and too frilly.
Liliana is nice. I prefer Lilian or Lilias personally.
Zara is nice, but it doesn’t grab me.
Not wild about Astrid either, but it’s fine.

Lydia?
Stella?
Celia?

Spied · 20/05/2020 12:56

Anna rather than Hannah?
I really like Astrid and would choose that tbh.

elfran · 20/05/2020 17:19

I love Astrid. If you're worried about "ass", what about Ingrid? Slightly more classic/well-known, same punchy ending. I wouldn't use Astrid as a middle name with any of your choices; since they all end in an -a sound, the two names blend into each other.

Hannah and Lyra are a bit nothing/forgettable to me. Your other choices are far more interesting.

Ophelia and Liliana I find far too frilly. What about Lilian?

Zara is nice and I can see the appeal, but I can never not think about the chain!

Whatsyourflava · 20/05/2020 17:29

Joshua is a great choice and I love Zara and Ophelia

How about Sadie, Mabel, Margot, Cleo, Cora, Greta. Clementine, Edith, Jemima, Roxanna, Martha, Pearl, Delilah

123Dancewithme · 20/05/2020 18:28

Hannah is lovely

Sittingontheveranda · 21/05/2020 01:20

Alexander and Astrid
Xander and Zara

I'm not a fan of any of the other names you listed.
