Names that remind you of people you know

Hiya,

OH and I have been struggling to pick any baby names. We've got a slightly more restricted pool of names cos it has to work here and in Italy, but also cos we've been ruling out any name that reminds us of someone, or is the same name as a friend. Some of them are great names but remind us of people we aren't necessarily fans of...

Most names we're looking at aren't super common, partly deliberate, partly cos of the Italy link so it might be obvious to people too if we go for the same name as theirs! Considering: Chiara, Elisabetta, Rosa, Sofia, Matteo, Marco, Fabio, Paolo (opinions and suggestions welcome!)

Has anyone got any experience of naming their baby the same name as someone they know? Does that association drop away in your mind once the baby arrives or do you always think 'they're sort of named after that person'?

My family does this stupid tradition and the confusion and association never stops. Im talking, grandma name for granddaughter for aunt, for neighbours kid, grandad name for brother, cousin 1 and 2 and friend at school.
I hated the constant mistakes and comparison.

Buuut if you mean one or two distant people then thats fine. There must be a name thats traditional but not too common.

I love Chiara, Rosa and Sofia from your list.

I realised it was really important for me to not already know someone with my kid’s name before they were born so that it was a totally blank slate of a name at that point. Not entirely sure it’s rational though.

I think it drops away as they have their own presence and personality

But your names are lovely particularly like Sofia, Matteo, Paolo and Elisabetta

Elisabetta and Sofia are lovely, Rosa is nice too

Paolo reminds me of the hot physics tutor at uni. daydreams

My Daughter has the same name as my Uncle. We have never been asked if she was named after my Uncle. She has her own identity. Funnily enough she was named Rosa for the first 11 months.
