I've been looking into my family tree (back to lay 1600's) and have found some amazing names along the way. I thought it would be fabulous to reuse names from our family trees. I have listed below names that feature on DP/I/both family trees.

Girls:
• Martha
• Annie
• Jeannie/Janie
• Clara
• Sarah
• Eliza
• Nellie

Boys:
• Jesse
• Thomas
• Joseph
• Albert
• Samuel
• Josiah
• Obed

Would absolutely love to hear your views on these names and which you'd reuse ❤️

I like these, just my opinion though!
Girls:
Eliza - Beautiful
Nellie - love this!

Boys:
Jesse - a friend of mine has a little boy called this, he’s the sweetest! Only Jesse I know though. Generally just like the name.
Thomas - Classic
Albert - Lovely with nickname choices.

TARSCOUT · 13/05/2020 22:54

I like proper names and it's quicker to tell you what I wouldn't use as I like most of them.

Out of the girls names the only one I wouldn't use would be Nellie as sorry, but at nearly 50 I just want to say smellie nellie.

Boys names not Jesse (ya big jessie maybe just a scottish thing) and Josiah and Obed are too religious (unless of course you are) but they remind me of OJ.

I really like proper names, did I already say that?

bridgetreilly · 13/05/2020 23:02

I mean, they're all fine, but quite ordinary. Aren't there any more interesting and unusual names among your ancestors?

Wrappedinancestry · 13/05/2020 23:05

Lemuel, Sidney, Fanny and Blodwen - but not so sure I'd use those 😂

I like most of them. My Mum, Grandma and Great Grandad and Great Great Grandad's names are all on your list and I love all those. The only ones I am not keen on are Obed - it sounds like something is missing, like it should be Obediah or something - and Nellie. I grew up watching Little House on the Prairie as a child and Nellie Olsen was a horrid girl in the books/tv series so that puts me off the name!

Wrappedinancestry · 13/05/2020 23:19

Funny you should say that @mrsavocet a Obed's son was Obediah

Ive always loved Josiah 🙂 will never have the chance to use it though as not having any more and husband not keen on the name anyway.

Third girl name on your list I have used ❤️

Wrappedinancestry · 14/05/2020 08:07

That's so lovely @chikitiki, I think Josiah is a great name too!

bridgetreilly · 14/05/2020 08:14

I love Lemuel and Sidney. And I actually really like Fanny if it weren't for the other meaning.

bridgetreilly · 14/05/2020 08:15

Obadiah is great!

Robs20 · 14/05/2020 08:19

Some lovely names! My daughters are Eliza and Annie so I’m a bit biased!
From you list the only ones I wouldn't use are Nellie and Obed.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 14/05/2020 08:25

How funny - both of my DC’s names are in your list.

Peachbubble · 14/05/2020 10:59

Girls:
• Martha
• Clara
• Eliza
• Nellie

Boys:
• Thomas
• Joseph

LotusClover · 14/05/2020 11:09

Martha - dated to me, but fairly popular now
Annie - love
Jeannie/Janie - quite like
Clara - LOVE, one of my favourite girls names
Sarah - dated and plain
Eliza - same as above
Nellie - strongly, strongly dislike, one of my least favourite girls names ever (sorry)

Jesse - love
Thomas - too common
Joseph - LOVE
Albert - horrible and dated, can't stand Albie either
Samuel - quite like
Josiah - not keen
Obed - never heard before but I don't like it

I like Clara and Annie best for girls. Jesse and Joseph for boys.

DoctorBambino · 14/05/2020 12:20

Girls:
• Martha - it's ok but still sounds old lady to me
• Annie - I quite like it
• Jeannie/Janie - nope not at all
• Clara - I like it
• Sarah - I like it
• Eliza - I like it
• Nellie - this is great, would definitely reuse

Boys:
• Jesse - not keen
• Thomas - love Thomas but not the inevitable Tom
• Joseph - nope
• Albert - its ok
• Samuel - yes love it would reuse
• Josiah - no
• Obed - not at all

finallychangedmyusername · 14/05/2020 12:36

I love Samuel, Joseph, Thomas and Josiah for boys and Annie, Clara, Sarah and Eliza for girls.

finallychangedmyusername · 14/05/2020 12:49

Meant to add... Samuel is one of my favourite boy names. And it would be so refreshing to hear of a baby Sarah.

StCharlotte · 14/05/2020 12:52

I like most of them.

I'm not keen on Nellie yet I do love Nel (and might have called a daughter Helen just so I could use it).

"Lemuel" is a fascinating name! It sounds really modern and like a made up name but it would be great to be able to say "actually it's seventeenth century so up your pipe!".

Wrappedinancestry · 14/05/2020 12:59

Thanks all. Really interesting to look back at the family history and names used

Martha is one of my favourite names, I always say I can’t imagine an unpleasant Martha. Lovely name.

Jesse is nice too.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/05/2020 21:13

Lemuel was Gulliver's first name in Gulliver's Travels. It's the only place I'd ever heard it before today.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/05/2020 21:29

I know most about my mother's family tree. For the men, there were lots of common names like:

Edward, John, Thomas, William and Arthur, but there was also a Horatio, a Claude and a couple of Willoughbys.

The women were mainly standard names like Mary and Elizabeth, but there was also an Augusta, a Zillah and a Thomasine
