Huge name regret after Coronavirus

I’m posting on here as it’s anonymous and I’m so ashamed to admit I’m thinking of changing my almost 1 year olds name.

I loved earthy and nature names for girls so after a couple of weeks of deliberation once she was born we named her Sage.

Since then a pandemic has happened, and every day at 5pm theres a government press conference where they talk about “SAGE” “what SAGE says” and their “consultations with SAGE”
(SAGE stands for the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies.)

All I can think is that from now on for the rest of her life whenever I tell people (or she tells people ) her name is Sage all people will think of is this pandemic and all they will mention is the government advisory committee!

It was already a bit of a marmite name and Ive never had very positive responses to it, even before this.

I could change it to her middle name which is more of a common name. If she grows up to hate her name I will regret not changing it when I had the chance, but then she knows her name would it be cruel and confusing to change it now?

It’s causing me so much mum guilt, anxiety and worry.

Has anyone changed their child’s name? Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thank you in advance Smile

I would change it. But I'm not really a fan of those kind of names (ie not in common usage, I'm not saying we should all have top 100 names) anyway - I'd hate to have to introduce myself as Sage!

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/05/2020 21:04

You're way, way overthinking this. The only reason its registering in your mind is because it's your dds name.

iklboo · 13/05/2020 21:04

All I think of is the herb, even now.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/05/2020 21:05

She didn't ask whether you like the name or not.

MyFartWillGoOn · 13/05/2020 21:06

I've watched almost all of the Govt briefings and despite that when you said that was her name, I didn't think of the commute, just the herb.

While it's not to my taste, I don't think you'll have a long term problem with it being linked to this pandemic

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 13/05/2020 21:06

SAGE will be forgotten next year. It's not like her name is corona like that poor boy in Australia.

Sexnotgender · 13/05/2020 21:06

I wouldn’t think of the advisory group at all. It’s a lovely name.

tilder · 13/05/2020 21:07

I thought you were going to say she was called Corona or Covid. At least one of those is a name. Which can't be easy.

If you love Sage, stick with Sage. Even if somebody makes a link, it's not a bad one.

Wallabyone · 13/05/2020 21:07

It's a pretty but unusual name. I really don't think of the pandemic, I think of the herb, and of seriousness. I think 1 is too far along to change it, and then what if you change it and have regrets? If you still like it, keep it xxx

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/05/2020 21:07

I have no strong feelings for or against the name, but I don’t make the connection with the advisory group when I hear it. And worse things to be connected to. I think you’re over thinking it.

superking · 13/05/2020 21:08

If you'd named her Corona I would agree to change it, as that word will remain in the public consciousness for a very long time. But SAGE is a lot less prominent, and although people who hear her name right now might think of it, once the pandemic is over I doubt anyone will make the connection. I wouldn't change it if I were you.

ConstanceSalinger · 13/05/2020 21:08

Yes, change it. There's lots of lovely ethereal natural names. Sage for me is a wizened old man wandering around Old Englande reading tea leaves.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 13/05/2020 21:09

Sage is a very cleansing herb. Good for sending bad spirts away,

I personally wouldn’t use it as a name. Has she got a middle name you can use instead and swap her names?

daisypond · 13/05/2020 21:09

I think of the herb, never of the government group. It’s fine.

Spied · 13/05/2020 21:09

I'd not think of it at all if you introduced your DD as Sage.
(And I'm obsessed with the bloody coronavirus briefing)

Neighneigh · 13/05/2020 21:10

I don't think you need to worry about the committee name, really. It's not like she's called Corona (which I would think, eek). But if you'd prefer, use her middle name - I'm known by mine, no one has ever used my official first name (except banks and passport but hey).

ConstanceSalinger · 13/05/2020 21:11

To be fair, it's not as bad as the hundreds of little girls all with the absolutely UNIQUE name of Isis. That one is very unfortunate as it's a pretty name to begin with.

Merename · 13/05/2020 21:11

I think it’s a lovely name. And I can’t imagine changing a baby of that age’s name. Do you use any pet names for her that can just become more used?

Lailaloo747 · 13/05/2020 21:11

Could be worse....my friend named her daughter Isis a few years back Hmm

topcat2014 · 13/05/2020 21:12

I am an accountant and have been using sage soft ware for years, so that is what I think of.

Once cv is over we may never hear of the committee again

stopandListen · 13/05/2020 21:12

Sage doesn't remind me of the pandemic, it reminds me of the computing package used for accounts more so.

It's quite a pretty name for a girl. I wouldn't change it just because of current times though.

HeronLanyon · 13/05/2020 21:12

I didn’t think of SAGE. I was expecting Corona. Now Cora I love !

LochJessMonster · 13/05/2020 21:12

I just associate with the herb. Wouldn’t even think of CV.
It’s nice, keep it.

MinorArcana · 13/05/2020 21:13

I was thinking that you were going to say your baby was called Corona!

I think that you’re overthinking the Sage government advisory committee thing. You’re noticing it because it’s your DDs name, but most other people won’t make that connection, especially once this pandemic is over.

TippledPink · 13/05/2020 21:13

I wouldn't think of the pandemic- it's a herb (or an accountancy system). Don't change it!
