Hello everyone !

I've tried to narrow it down to a shortlist and I'm considering my top 3. But before I pick one for good I'd like to have maybe one last thought about names that I could like but haven't thought of, would appreciate any help ! I'm 38wk so fast running out of time, eh.

Criteria : must be fairly international, I like names that end in -S, nothing made-up but a bit uncommon is good. I dislike one-syllable names as I like being able to use nicknames.

My top 3 so far :

Mathias Ilya
Axel Mathias/Elias
Elias Axel

Names I've discarded :

  • Lukas (love it but can't get past certain associations)
  • Jonas (don't love it so much)
  • Louis (feel like it doesn't flow with my last name)
  • Joris (too close to DS1's name)
  • Magnus (don't think it'd work in my culture and like it less than Mathias)
  • Markus (same)
  • Joachim (like but don't love)
  • Erik (same)

So anyway, I don't really need opinions on my top 3 as I need to be the one who likes it rather than be swayed by people's opinions, but I'd love suggestions of names in a similar vein.

Thanks in advance !

Axel is my favourite - love it

Elias sounds very similar to a lot of more popular top 100 names so probably isn't the sort of name youre after

Whatsyourflava · 13/05/2020 08:30

Tristan
Barnaby
Sidney nn Sid
Laurence nn Laurie
Vincent nn Vinnie

Malysh · 13/05/2020 08:38

@whatsyourflava - thanks ! The issue I have is that Axel is already my middle name, and also my brother (baby's uncle) is Alex... So it feels like a lot of similar names in baby's close family. Hasn't put me off 100%, as evidenced by it being in the top 3, but defo making me think twice about it.

Thanks for your other suggestions, I'm afraid Laurence is a girl's name in my country Grin. Sidney feels very english/british, Barnaby is very old-fashioned (reminds me too much of Inspector Barnaby... An old crime TV series).

I do like Tristan but it rhymes with my last name and has the same number of syllables so it sounds really weird when you say the full name.

Out of your top 3 I think I like Axel Mathias best. It has the best flow and the names go well together.

All the names you listed are very different to my taste so I can't really add any suggestions. Maybe Ellis but that's about it.

LotusClover · 13/05/2020 09:12

Oh and just out of interest, which country are you from?

Spied · 13/05/2020 09:14

Felix

I like Matthias the best 😊.
I adore Jonas. Amos is pretty great too. Willis, Tobias or Maximus.

OnABeachSomewhere · 13/05/2020 12:02

Tobias
Maximus
Linus
Carlos
Marcus
Silas
Moses
Atticus
Elias
Francis
Elias
Miles
Nicholas
Boris
Julius

@Lotusclover - I'm french but I travel and live abroad for work reasons. Hence the international choice of names, the kids might go to school in a spanish speaking country one year and in a russian speaking country the next year...

@OnABeachSomewhere - thanks for all the suggestions ! DS1 is already Boris (nothing to do with Johnson, I'm not british so he's as relevant to me as Eltsin or Becker... Just liked the name). Max is definitely a name to consider (though I think I like Maximilian better). Unfortunately a few of those names just wouldn't work in my country - Moses or Atticus would definitely raise eyebrows !

@babynamelover - thanks ! If I had to decide today it'd probably be Mathias but I need to be sure that it is the name Wink

Also I'm not overly fond of Matt as a nickname but maybe I can find another nickname I like better.

Mathias Ilya
Axel Mathias/Elias
Elias Axel

Is Mathias Mat-ee-as or Math-eye-as?
Is Elias - El-eye-as or El-ee-as? I prefer Ilyas to Elias. Ilya looks wrong.

Of the first names I much prefer Axel but Axel Elias has two el''s next to each other.

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2020 15:20

Matteo
Tobias
Andreas

KipperTea · 13/05/2020 15:27

I like Elias best, then Mathias.

Other ideas:
Felix
Stephan
Anton
Gabriel
Raphael
Francis
Thomas
Jan/Yann/Yan
Finn/Fynn
Leon
Henry
Max

stopandquarantine · 13/05/2020 18:08

If I had to choose any of your combinations I'd probably go with Axel Elias even though the L sounds so close together does bother me slightly.

Other suggestions

Eli/Elijah/Ellis Mathias
Levi Axel
Julian Mathias

Malysh · 13/05/2020 19:54

@MikeUniformMike - I guess the pronunciation will depend on the language. In my native language it's definitely Matt-ee-as. But I don't really mind if it's pronounced differently when we speak other languages.

Same with Elias, it's El-ee-as in my language but if english speakers say El-aye-as I don't really mind. Nickname would probably be Ellee and not Ee-lie.

Ilya is the russian version of Elias. Ilyas would be the same in arabic. There's nothing wrong with that but I have a connection to Russia that I do not have to Arabic countries, so using the Russian version made sense to me - also, Mathias Ilyas would sound a bit too rhymey for my taste !

I also like Mathias Axel but that means losing the Russian connection and also baby would have the same middle name as me...

Thanks everyone for your thoughts ! I'm mulling over it, good thing I got a few more days to make up my mind ! Doc said if baby doesn't show up by the end of the month we'll talk about inducing so not long now (thank heaven, I'd kill for a cold beer right now !)

Ilya is fine then.

I suggested Tobias thinking Tob-ee-as.

Use something more Russian esp if the surname is more Arabic-sounding.

There are loads of wonderful Russian names. Isn't the tradition to use the father's name like Mr Putin's ---ovich

Don't worry too much about the middle name, they don't usually get used much.
