Amira or Alia/ Aliya?

Millie272020 · 10/05/2020 19:39

I have been confused between these names as you might remember from my previous threads:
Amira
Leila
Serena
Alia/ Aliya

But I have now shortlisted the names down to Amira and Aliya / Alia. Which one do you prefer & why? How would you spell them? We are thinking about going for the spelling Aliya as I already know someone with their name spelt as Alia. I don’t really like the Aaliyah spelling because it is too long.

Background is Arab and English and Amira means princess, Alia/ Aliya means exhalted/ noble

Im going to throw another version into the mix.
I like it spelt Aleah.
I think Aliya could be pronounced like a-liar, and Alia could be A-lia rather than A-leah.

Millie272020 · 10/05/2020 19:51

I would want it pronounced as Aaaalia...

I am a little bit confused then as the name you are asking about is based on Aaliyah pronounced A-leah.... Not pronounced Aaaaalia....?

LotusClover · 10/05/2020 20:00

"Aaaa-lia" doesn't sound right to me. Aliya should be pronounced "a-LEE-ah".

How about Talia or Tahlia, pronounced "tar-lia"?

Amira is gorgeous.

KittenVsBox · 10/05/2020 20:02

I like Amira.
I'm not keen on Alia.

I think you want Aaliya for the pronunciation you are after, but both Aliya and Aaliya are good names.

Millie272020 · 10/05/2020 20:12

Sorry for the confusion, I mean Aa-lee-a, the Arab pronunciation :)

Elouera · 10/05/2020 20:20

I too know the name Aleah, but its A-lee-a, not the Aa-lee-a you want. I can only think of Aliya as you said?

What about Aymara or Amara?

redberrytree · 10/05/2020 20:39

I would pronounce Aliya a-LEE-ah, so you might be correcting people

I really like Amira

IckleBear · 10/05/2020 20:43

Amira is lovely

mooching · 10/05/2020 20:59

My preference is Amira, if you are in the UK there will be less confusion over the pronunciation but I prefer it anyway it is lovely. Thanks

peperethecat · 10/05/2020 21:11

Amira.

Millie272020 · 10/05/2020 22:31

Thank you everyone for your opinions so far! Looks like with Aliya/ Alia, I will be correcting people a lot...

The Aliyah I know pronounces it the way you want it, so I would assume it’s said that way. I prefer Amira though.

Overthinker1988 · 10/05/2020 22:56

I love Amira, very pretty but also a "strong" name. Not as keen on the other one regardless of spelling...it's not bad but it sounds a bit wishy washy to me.

Millie272020 · 10/05/2020 23:47

Thank you! How would you spell it to get the Ah-Lee-Ah pronunciation?

OP posts:
babynamelover · 10/05/2020 23:59

Aaliyah :)

I prefer Amira.

MikeUniformMike · 12/05/2020 16:06

Amira.
I'd see Alia as Al-ee-a
