Hello!

DC2 due soon, don't know the sex.

Would ideally like something that ticks the English and Indian box as that will be a nod to DCs background.

After going through books, the internet and mumsnet, here's what's made the long list... Let me know your thoughts, and if you have any suggestions!

Thanks so much 😊

A lot of names on your list don't sound indian to me...?

For boys I'd say Kieran. Like the sound of it.

For girls I like Anita, Mischa and Zina (but I'd assume Anita was spanish and Mischa/Zina was russian tbh).

Josh
Silas

Nina
Marnie
Sadie

duggeedoesmyheadin · 09/05/2020 22:32

@Malysh quite a few are Sikh/Hindu names e.g. Himmat, Sarjan, Avani, Noorie. Some are crossover e.g. Kiran, Nina but yes probably about two thirds are English/Western.

Something that's more crossover would be ideal as DC1's name is crossover, but we're open to totally English or totally Indian names too. There just doesn't seem to be any that DH and I get the feels for yet.

@duggeedoesmyheadin I like Jeevan and Anjali. I used to know a girl of Indian origin called Angelie and always thought it was beautiful... don’t know if that’s an anglicized version of the name but I prefer the Anjali spelling. Also like Rohan for a boy.

Yash and Avani

MikeUniformMike · 12/05/2020 16:33

Isn't Sian an Indian surname.
The welsh names don't really work.

The surname makes a difference - is it a traditional UK surname or an asian one?

duggeedoesmyheadin · 12/05/2020 17:26

@MikeUniformMike Possibly. I know Shaan is Hindu boys's first name, but Sian (pronounced in the same way) is a Welsh girls first name.

There is also Sharn. I went to a school where a Sikh girl had the name Sharnjit, but everyone called her Sharn.

The surname is a solid English surname.

I think the Indian one is Sigh-an.

I don't think the welsh, cornish and irish names really work because of pronunciation and spelling. Amazingly, Nia causes problems! Siân isn't quite Shahn.
Eleri and Lowri will both be mispronounced, and none seem like current baby names. They are all nice though.
(Nee-ah, El-ERRy and Low-ry not like the painter). The are you Welsh questions would be a PITA.

I think I'd go for a really pretty Indian or Sanskrit name for a girl - Anjali, Priya, Anoushka or Shria.

Kiran can be male or female. The Kierans and Kirans I know are middle aged. None of the boys' names grab me. A friend has an Arjan - that's quite nice.

Go for a name you love.
