Nancy Or Pearl

Really struggling to decide between the two.

Nancy has always been one of my favourite girl's names, and Pearl is my mother's name (she's amazing).

Thoughts?

Pearl is beautiful.
I can't imagine a baby Nancy. It is not a very nice sound.

AravisTarkheena · 07/05/2020 13:56

@DOINGOURBIT Sorry, I mean that. I did regret saying that after I wrote it as I felt it was a bit harsh on OPs favourite name.

I don’t like my name much either and it’s a very highly recommend one on MN. I use my middle name.

Whatsyourflava · 07/05/2020 13:59

Was coming on here to say both names are gorgeous - couldn't pick but I think if I were you I'd pick Pearl because of family connection @iloveyoubutilovememore

@DOINGOURBIT your name is lovely. I know it's hard to resist sometimes but I'd ignore threads about your own name as there's always a totally sphere of opinions on here and it'll only make you question things. Remember that all names have positive and negative feedback on here. No name is perfect and universally loved. I've seen two threads on here about the names Hunter and Sonny over the past 2 days and most on Mumsnet seem to absolutely hate and detest them (I happen to love them), but the general public clearly love these two names as they're two of the fastest rising boy names. Don't worry about it at all. I love your name.

Whatsyourflava · 07/05/2020 14:02

Ps. I never liked my own name @DOINGOURBIT never keen on it growing up. It's always slated on Mumsnet. But actually that has made me really protective of it and has actually made me realise I love it 🤣

Edenember · 07/05/2020 14:12

Both lovely - Nancy Pearl? Use the monosyllabic one as a middle name, also lovely family tribute x

Flower1309 · 07/05/2020 14:17

Pearl is much nicer than Nancy.

Edenember · 07/05/2020 14:19

@DOINGOURBIT I’m new here and have really noticed how horrible some people can be. I’m all for not being patronised, if you ask for critique, you asked and we’re all big girls here. I also understand people have aversions to certain names, we all have them, noones above it. However there are diplomatic, and kinder ways to say things. I also find it quite unbelievable that some people on the internet can feel so omnipotent that they think their critique is the last word in a complete strangers decision making process. It’s daft.

DOINGOURBIT · 07/05/2020 14:21

Thank you - Whatsyourflava....

I know we all have our likes and dislikes, that's what makes the world go round ! I've never given any name in particular so much thought that I'd state it as objectionable. After all, someone's Mum loved it for their child... I'm not bothered whether people like my name or not - take it or leave it, kind of thing, but the 'objectionable' thing stung. I've been cooped up for seven weeks and it's playing havoc with emotions.

Thank you for kindness, and also poster for apology.

Oh, and I quite like Pearl !

TheOtherSideOfTheMountain · 07/05/2020 14:35

Really like Pearl, although agree with others about the unfortunate Pearl Necklace connotation. Do have to say though I sometimes think directly naming kids after a relative is a bit much, means they don't get their "own" identity. So why not go with Pearl as middle name?

Nancy's ok. Maybe Nancy Pearl? She could always choose to go by her middle name if she preferred it.

sibbys · 07/05/2020 17:24

I think they are both sweet. How about Nancy Pearl?

I prefer Nancy.

Apolloanddaphne · 07/05/2020 18:01

Nancy is my DM's name (she is 79) so it makes me think of an old (ish) woman. Not keen on Pearl because in my Scottish accent it sounds like 'peril'.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 07/05/2020 18:18

Love Nancy, not keen on Pearl sorry

beesthatbuzz · 07/05/2020 18:20

Nancy Pearl.

Love Nancy, was one of my choices.

Roselilly36 · 07/05/2020 18:20

I love Nancy, Pearl no, just no.

ComeOnEileen11 · 07/05/2020 18:25

Both lovely. I'd go for pearl over Nancy, based on it being your mum's name too :)

JKScot4 · 07/05/2020 18:28

Nancy used to be a nasty slur towards gay men
Pearl very dated and not in need of a comeback.

GinnyStrupac · 07/05/2020 18:28

I like both names and think they go well together. I prefer personally loved names and names that mean something - for example a loved one or place - than names that are just fashionable. None of DCs' names here were fashionable when chosen, though one has unfortunately gone up a bit in popularity since chosen by someone in the public eye. Go for them, OP.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2020 18:33

Call her Nancy Pearl, they go together well.

I'm not fond of either of them myself, not my style at all.

MikeUniformMike · 07/05/2020 18:39

Nancy Pearl is nice.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 07/05/2020 19:00

Pearl

daisypond · 07/05/2020 19:05

Nancy. I like it.

17caterpillars1mouse · 07/05/2020 19:50

Pearl definitely.

I really don't like Nancy. I think because the only one I've known was a very bolshy child and very princessy, look at me

YakkityYakYakYak · 07/05/2020 19:52

I think they are both lovely.
