@DotBall Yes, I was worried people would think it was Lake-a.

I couldn't separate the name Laika from that terrible cruel image of that poor dog. I just couldn't. It's got the same permanent stain as Myra, Adolf, etc and I wouldn't want my child growing up (a) having people say to her, Oh, as in that poor dog the Russians sent into space to die scared and alone? Or (b) silently thinking it. It's not THAT nice a name.

As for Alaska, I'll ask 'er. Oh, wait.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 02/05/2020 11:08

I know a Laika (pronounce lie- ka) Shes her late 30s and totally awesome so I think it’s great name. As far as I’m aware she likes her name too.

Booboostwo · 02/05/2020 11:08

It's not so much that the dog went into space, it's more that it was left to die there. There are movies and songs about it, so it will be associated for a lot of people with a sad event.

Why Alaska? It's not a particularly nice word and you'd need a good reason to give a child a toponymic as a first name.

emwithme · 02/05/2020 11:08

As PP have said, Laika is a dog.

Alaska? Don't worry, Alaska myself

Mucklowe · 02/05/2020 11:09

"What's your child's name?"
"Alaska."
"Don't worry. I'll ask her myself."

campion · 02/05/2020 11:12

Genoa Madeira? Alaska. ..

YinMnBlue · 02/05/2020 11:12

Alaska will condemn her to life if ‘I’ll ask her’ jokes.
Has anyone seen the hole punch?
Maybe Alaska?
Ask who?
Alaska....

And the baked thing.

But Ali could be a nickname.

Saskia?

MaryHill · 02/05/2020 11:13

Nickname for Alaska could be Lassie.

You could have Laika and Lassie.

YinMnBlue · 02/05/2020 11:14

What’s your girlfriend’s name?
Laika
I don’t know, haven’t met her yet...

MaryHill · 02/05/2020 11:14

But, to be serious....for a wintery, cold sounding Russian name, I always think of Lara, from Dr. Zhivago.

MamaTo7 · 02/05/2020 11:15

@YinMnBlue I like Saskia and also Sasha aswell.

@MaryHill Would definitely not have both haha. Grin

By the time she's growing up, few, if any, will remember the unfortunate connotation with the Russian space dog. However, most people will probably mispronounce the name as Lake-ah. As for Alaska, just no--there are better state names out there.

myangelalex · 02/05/2020 11:18

Sound like dogs names.

YinMnBlue · 02/05/2020 11:25

Saskia and Sasha are both lovely Smile

whatdoyoudonow · 02/05/2020 11:36

Yes, I was worried people would think it was Lake-a.

That's how I read it.

whatdoyoudonow · 02/05/2020 11:37

You could have Laika and Lassie.

Oh my God! Haha!

MamaTo7 · 02/05/2020 11:38

I love Alaska, big John Green fan.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 02/05/2020 12:02

Alaska isn’t too bad, but there’s a very prominent drag queen with the name already.

Laika- sounds nice but is basically the equivalent of calling your baby Rover.

Blursula · 02/05/2020 12:04

I have actually always thought Alaska is a really cool name. I guess nn Lass/Lassie? but that spoils it a bit.

MamaTo7 · 02/05/2020 12:05

@babynamelover That's where I first heard it from though I've never read the book. It's become quite common since then. Smile

ClementineTangerine · 02/05/2020 12:08

I thought laika was pronounced lake-a which I personally think sounds better than like-a as that sounds like lycra.

If you like alaska what about Aspen?

Also if you like laika theres a mummy blogger in america who has a daughter called laiken (she might spell it differently actually I think something like Laikynn)

MamaTo7 · 02/05/2020 12:20

@ClementineTangerine Don't mind Aspen but wouldn't use it. Is this the chalk board meme? I remember Laiklynn on that. Grin

Thank you for your suggestions. Smile
