Alternatives to Keir

DH (Scottish) and I both like the name Keir (him more than me) but have gone off it a bit as we don't want the baby sharing a name with a prominent politician! Does anyone have any similar type of names to Keir? We like Scottish names but not exclusively. Thanks!

Yes I like it but it's fairly unusual and very much associated with Starmer and he could be prime minister so I personally completely agree and would want an alternative.
I'll have a think.

Kyle?

Nothing wrong with Keir. My eldest is Keir and he’ll be 23 this year.
There are other Kier’s around and doesn’t have to be a negative connotation. Think even if I was expecting my son now I would still call him Keir but then I’m not really political so maybe the wrong person to give an opinion. .

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 30/04/2020 22:35

Not sure why spellcheck randomly changed one Keir to Kier.

Thanks for the suggestions so far... we quite like Gregor but it doesn't work with our surname!

To be fair, it's always been strongly associated with a prominent Labour politician of much greater significance than Keir Starmer: Keir Hardie.

Kerr seems the obvious one

We have a Keir who is in his 20s. I have always loved the name. if you like it, use it. I was very aware of the labour party connotations when we named our ds. Obviously we didn't anticipate that there may be a Labour Leader called Keir in the 2020s.

I guess if you really don't want the association then you need to think of something else. Fraser?

Whatsyourflava · 30/04/2020 23:18

@UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter ah Keir is a great name for a 23 year old. No one will think your son was named after Starmer, potential next prime minister.
I think the names Boris or Keir are pretty bold choices for a baby born in 2020 though. I'd avoid both these days in 2020 but that's just me.

Whatsyourflava · 30/04/2020 23:20

Same to you @EmmaGrundyForPM - Keir is a lovely name for your 20yo. I personally wouldn't use it in 2020 for a newborn.

quizwhitty · 30/04/2020 23:20

Thanks everyone, we are aware of Keir Hardie but feel the connection wouldn't be as obvious. It is a lovely name though. Any more suggestions much appreciated Smile

I know a little Scottish girl called Keir. (I think it's normally used for boys though).

I think you can still use Keir, despite the politician, as long as your surname is different.
