Helskitchen · 28/04/2020 08:44

Please could you give your views on our girls list, your favourites and why? We seem to like them all which is the difficult part:

Theodora
Dorothy
Vivienne
Felicity
Imogen
Frances
Lara

Thanks

Theodora is my absolute favourite. It’s uncommon but beautiful. You could shorten it to Thea as a nn if you wish or even Teddy which is sweet while they are young. Theodora in its own right is lovely though.
Dorothy is my second, the others I’m not to keen on sorry. But hey, that’s only my opinion! Go for what you love.

MikeUniformMike · 28/04/2020 09:06

Theodora - dislike. So many Theos
Dorothy - love
Vivienne - not keen on it, prefer Vivien, but both will be Viv
Felicity - too long and prssy
Imogen - ok but not keen on Immy
Frances - fine, but it will get misspelt as Francis
Lara - nice

BrandoraPaithwaite · 28/04/2020 09:22

All great names! This is a difficult list to critique.

Frances is strong, there are inspiring women in history with this name, it's less common and wide range of shortening possibilities. The winner.

Imogen- nice, too popular.
Felicity- too frilly.
Lara- will get confused with Laura, seems a bit American sounding.

Best overall list I've seen on here!

difficulttod · 28/04/2020 09:27

I think Felicity is beautiful and the meaning is lovely.

Frances is a great name if you want something a bit stronger (not sure why PP thinks it would be misspelled as the male version).

GreenTulips · 28/04/2020 09:40

Theodora. Like it
Dorothy. Just no
Vivienne too harsh
Felicity. To wishy washy
Imogen. To harsh
Frances. To wet
Lara. To many

LotusClover · 28/04/2020 09:51

Theodora - becoming way too popular, never liked it anyway
Dorothy - this one's growing on me, don't like the nickname Dotty/Dottie though - too cutesy
Vivienne - nice, particularly this spelling over Vivian
Felicity - okay, but the nickname Flick is horrible
Imogen - okay but not my taste
Frances - nice, strong name - favourite
Lara - very nice but seems to be becoming popular

MadameJosephine · 28/04/2020 09:55

Felicity by a mile, beautiful name. I prefer Lissy as a nn to Flick though

SquirtleSquad · 28/04/2020 09:56

Felicity is lovely, I know one, she's 3 and very sweet. They call her Fliss.

Ginandplatonic · 28/04/2020 09:58

Oh that’s difficult. I actually like them all but prefer Dorothea to Dorothy.
Love Theodora too.
If I was pressed to eliminate some it would be Vivienne and Imogen because I know quite a few and you have some lovely less common ones to choose from.
And Lara sounds a bit harsh beside your other choices.

peperethecat · 28/04/2020 10:02

Theodora - don't really like it, not sure why
Dorothy - don't really like this either, think it's the hipster trend for granny names
Vivienne - prostitute name from Pretty Woman, will be shortened to Viv
Felicity - beautiful
Imogen - nice
Frances - nice
Lara - beautiful

I would go for Felicity or Lara as first preference, then Frances, then Imogen.

Mish85 · 28/04/2020 10:14

Theodora -Lovely but as a longer name will most likely get shorter versions eg. Dora- so make sure you're keen on this too.
Dorothy - Love
Vivienne - Love but not a huge fan of Viv as nn.
Felicity - Seems a different style to others, not a huge fan as I prefer the older names. As a teacher they seems fresher as went to school with, and have now taught, Felicity's and Imogens.

Imogen- as Felicity
Frances - Like, especially nn. Frankie
Lara - Doesn't have as much depth for mad the others.

Only personal opinions of course. They're all lovely names so I don't think you can go wrong.

Whatsyourflava · 28/04/2020 10:22

We have exactly the same taste @Helskitchen - just seen your boys list and I’m seriously in love with your names

Theodora - love 10/10
Dorothy - Love 10/10
Vivienne - love 7/10 but worry about Viv shortening (you can try and insist on VIvi but my friend tried that - didn’t work- gets called Viv)
Felicity - love 10/10
Imogen - love 11/10 (favourite ) and much less common than it used to be whereas some of your other choices are increasing. So Imogen may actually be a safer choice.
Frances - ok 6/10
Lara - love 10/10

DoctorBambino · 28/04/2020 10:25

Theodora - I like it and all the typical nns
Dorothy - not keen, too old lady for my tastes
Vivienne - really dont like it, especially dislike the idea of "viv"
Felicity - its ok
Imogen - kind of like it
Frances - nope not for me
Lara - love it

Whatsyourflava · 28/04/2020 10:26

@BrandoraPaithwaite yes I agree - best list I’ve seen and also think the same about her boys list.
My favourite is Imogen as it’s a gorgeous name, excellent nickname potential and has been on a downward trajectory year on year since 2010 (10 years!) so actually I think in the coming years it could be rarer than the other choices (lots of which are deservedly increasing in popularity according to official stats)

Spied · 28/04/2020 10:29

Vivienne, Imogen and Lara are lovely. Classic.
I would worry about Vivienne becoming Viv though.
Felicity is quite nice.
I think Dorothy is due a comeback and will be v.popular in the next few yrs.
Theodora I don't like.
Absolutely not Frances. And Fran is just awful.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 28/04/2020 10:41

Like them all except Felicity - I know lots of people love the name Felicity but I just don’t get it, sorry!
Imogen is probably my favorite, although close tie with Dorothy. I think Thea is becoming very popular which would worry me a little. I like Frances - dislike Fran but you still have Frankie/Frank/Francie as nickname options. Don’t get why people think Lara and Laura will be confused - I know a couple of Laras and it’s never been a problem for them. Good luck!

merryhouse · 28/04/2020 10:53

I love Dorothy and Felicity.

I've always found Theodora a bit clunky. Imogen has never appealed to me, not sure why. Frances is ok. I always used to be wary of it because the standard nickname used to be Fanny, but my niece goes by Fran and as far as I'm aware has never had any problem with teasing. Vivienne looks both 1960s and a bit try-hard (especially if it's actually pronounced Vivian). Lara is just meh.

Helskitchen · 28/04/2020 11:12

Thank you for the lovely replies so far all! So so pleased you like my list, I do think posting a list gives a better overall idea of our style. We are still amidst discussions over the names so this is hugely helpful. Do keep them coming! Smile

Also please pop over to my boys list for your opinions and suggestions there Star

Hi again OP, just because I think I have the same taste as you, here are a few more that were on my list for dc:

Josephine
Constance
Matilda
Elizabeth

We didn't use any of those in the end!

Helskitchen · 28/04/2020 11:25

@BrandoraPaithwaite They were all in my list too but DH wasn't as keen on them as those I've posted! Do you mind me asking what you went with?

Dyra · 28/04/2020 11:41

I like Felicity and Imogen. All the others are a bit too oldster for my tastes.

georgialondon · 28/04/2020 11:42

The only one I like is Theodora

babynamelover · 28/04/2020 11:46

Theodora by a mile 😍

helpmum2003 · 28/04/2020 11:46

It's a good list OP.

Theodora - love it and also Thea or Dora as nn
Dorothy - not keen
Vivienne - not keen
Felicity - love it and nn Fliss or Lissi
Imogen - love it.
Frances - not keen
Lara - okay

Peachbubble · 28/04/2020 12:36

I like Dorothy, Felicity and Lara.
