Sibling names too similar?

We are still working on our list of names for our baby girl - due September so at least we have some time! Love the name Alexandra, it goes really well with our one syllable surname. However, her big brother’s name is Lachie, and we like the nickname Lexi best for a baby Alexandra (could be Alex later on). Is Lachie and Lexi just a bit much? Thought?

Lachie short for Lachlan I should say, but we almost never call him by his full name.

Hate lexi
Sexy Lexi
Think is awfu jmo

SliAnCroix · 27/04/2020 01:07

I think they are too alike. What about Sasha short for Alexandra? Lexi and Lachie is too much. LIke kittens.
What about Beatrix, trixi ?

wonderrotunda · 27/04/2020 01:12

Xan?

Hopefulhen · 27/04/2020 01:41

What about Allie as a nickname?

TenThousandSpoons0 · 27/04/2020 06:06

Thanks :) Sasha could possibly work, or perhaps I just need to think of nn Alex from the start. Don’t know why I have just always thought Lexi for short (not remotely bothered by sexy Lexi!)
We have some others we like equally on the shortlist, was just trying to figure out whether this is a deal breaker forAlexandra or not.

Lexa for a nickname

BelfastNonBlonde · 27/04/2020 06:54

I don’t think it realistic to plan on using one nn for a baby / child (Lexi) and then change it to another later (Alex).
What about Alexa? The speaker thing connection wouldn’t bother me - she would outlive them.

AlexandraThePanda · 27/04/2020 07:01

My name is Alexandra and I think there are so many more options for NN if you are worried about the names being so similar. I personally go by Ally but I've always quite liked Alexa although now with the amazon gadget thing I'm not sure how poular Alexa is. When we were children my sister always called me Andra or Andy.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 27/04/2020 07:39

I love Lexi. And I don't think they're too similar.

SnowdropFox · 27/04/2020 08:51

Dont think they are too similar, you might end up calling her some completely unrelated nn naturally anyway.

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2020 09:54

I don't like Lexi.

Sasha is a much nicer diminutive.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 27/04/2020 10:02

Why not just call her her actual name?

SliAnCroix · 27/04/2020 11:03

Alexandra is too long, it begs for a nic name.
Alex a bit harsh on a girl (it's OK though)
Sasha - Beautiful
Lexi - Pretty, but it's a bit Amanda HOlden.

SliAnCroix · 27/04/2020 11:04

Wow, apologies for that AH remark, it was bitchier than I want to be.

TenThousandSpoons0 · 27/04/2020 11:49

Agree Alexandra is too long and needs a nickname - we would rarely use the full name.
Part of its appeal is that it has such great nicknames and she’d be able to choose for herself later on. My favourite of the nicknames is definitely Alex but it just sort of doesn’t feel like a baby’s name to me, perhaps I just need to get over that as Lachie and Alex is much better than Lachie and Lexi for sure!
Thanks all. .

They’re not babies for long though @TenThousandSpoons0 - alex will be a gorgeous nickname 😍

MikeUniformMike · 27/04/2020 20:28

I really like Sandy. I was a bit surprised when a few years ago I met a mum with a little girl called Sandy, but it really suited her.
Xandie might be a more unusual nn.

merryhouse · 27/04/2020 20:51

Xandi is cute.

I've never really understood Sasha for Alexand(er/ra)...

Trouble with deciding to change nicknames "when she's older" is that when exactly is that going to be? Quite apart from anything else, it won't be long before she's aware of what her name is and has her own thoughts on it, and on how old is appropriate Grin

user1493494961 · 27/04/2020 22:58

Dislike Lexi, think it's a bit downmarket.

Brownyblonde · 27/04/2020 23:05

Lachie? Isn't that a nickname for a prisoner or have I got that wrong? Confused
