really really dislike Olly, Ollie etc on a girl - is it worth the risk considering 80 percent or even more Olivias are just Olivia or Liv or Livvy or Livia? I don't mind is occasionally used or used with one or two friends, but don't want it to become her name iyswim like a proper shortening she uses generally

Olivia usually gets shortened to Liv or Livvy so I wouldn't worry. I've never heard of Oli, Ollie being used for a girl.

Whatsyourflava · 26/04/2020 14:55

I guess there’s a possibility but I’d say the possibility is close to zero

Malone98 · 26/04/2020 14:55

I've known a few Olivias and they have definitely been called Oli... What about Alivia (Ali) or Ellivia (Ellie)? Xx

Haggisfish · 26/04/2020 14:56

I’ve taught lots of olivias, never once heard it shortened too Ollie.

WashYourFins · 26/04/2020 14:56

Always known Livs or Livvys

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/04/2020 14:56

It all depends on what she prefers as she gets older. I know 1 female Ollie - she just prefers it over Liv.

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/04/2020 14:58

I really like Ollie/Oli as a nn for Olivia, but I like masculine shortenings for female names in general. You don’t have to call her that but her friends might, she might even like it for herself

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/04/2020 15:06

I know an Olivia who is shortened to Libby.

You can influence things by choosing what nickname you use for your children, but it doesn’t always work. One of our dses is Christopher, which I didn’t want shortened to Chris - it is a name I’m not fond of. Throughout his childhood, we used his full name, and had a different nickname that was used in the family, but when he went to Uni, his friends there started using Chris, and it stuck.

LochJessMonster · 26/04/2020 15:07

Never heard of that as a nn, it’s always been Liv or Livvy etc

GatoFofo · 26/04/2020 15:08

I only know one Olivia and she is known as Olly, sorry.

couchlover · 26/04/2020 15:09

Its very unlikely but my advise is if you really dislike it then don't go with the name as you won't know what she and her friends will shorten it too.

My dh and I both liked Charlotte and liked almost every nn we heard of, accept Charli and ultimately decided not to use the name just in case.

pinkpinecone · 26/04/2020 15:24

It's true that have no control over the nickname.

SemperIdem · 26/04/2020 15:37

Never known an Olivia be shortened to Ollie but obviously reading the above posts, it can and does happen!

I also know of an Olivia who goes by Libby.

Alice1234567 · 26/04/2020 16:44

I only know two Olivias and both are known as Ol or Olly. Sorry. I like that nn though! There’s so many variations on that name and it’s so popular now with name lists I’m sure your daughter would chose to shorten it (or not shorten it) in anyway she likes to make it hers.

CMMum88 · 26/04/2020 16:49

The older Olivia's I went to school with were Ollie's but the young ones all seem to be Liv or Livvy.

Devlesko · 26/04/2020 16:52

Livia, is very popular, so is liv, or livvie.
Be careful it's not livia with chlamydia. A rhyme my mates kid came home with.

jaoler · 26/04/2020 18:47

I've only ever known olivia's be liv or livvy..... but I do love Ollie actually Blush

Bertucci · 26/04/2020 18:49

I know an Olivia and her parents often call her Olive, but as a piss-take.

Spirali · 26/04/2020 19:17

My friends little girl is Olivia but they mostly call her Oli. I prefer it so much more to Liv! However one of my closest friends is Olivia but known as Liv so I don’t hate it.

MrsMonicaBing · 26/04/2020 19:18

My daughter is Olivia and she's never once been called Ollie :)

TheySnackin · 27/04/2020 18:15

I'm an Olivia. I've only ever been called Ollie by one person my whole 30+ years. By my old boss and I absolutely hated it!

ZebraKid71 · 27/04/2020 18:58

The only Olivia I know who goes by Olly has been that since she was born - she's only Olivia on her birth certificate. All the others naturally shorten to liv/livvy.

There's always the risk she won't like liv or Olivia and will choose Ollie herself.. Could you use liv/livvy on the birth certificate. (I don't usually line nn as proper names but it would solve your problem)

Whatsyourflava · 27/04/2020 19:00

Know of a few adult Olivia’s - none have ever been called Ollie

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 27/04/2020 19:54

I have an Olympia (8yrs) - she is generally know as Olly. Most people assume her name is Olivia.
