Getting to a spelling based on a sound

Changedname81 · 22/04/2020 19:09

The name is for a girl and the sound is Meeka. I don’t think this is a recognized spelling.

Obviously you have the boys name Micha (Myka) and then there is Mica which I believe is pronounced Misha?

Is Meeka a recognized girl name and we’ve overlooked an obvious spelling? (This is my cousins baby)

If it’s not a name no need to be harsh. Just inform us Grin

I thought Micah was a boys name pronounced mi-cah/ mika?

And Mica was the girl version pronounced as mee-cha. (I have a female cousin called Mica).

Riv · 22/04/2020 20:45

Mieka is the way I've seen the girls name I recognise as Mee Ka spelt.
Mica and Micah I have known used as boys names and pronounced Mike a (with the short a, as in cat)

Riv · 22/04/2020 20:48

I think Mica can be used as either male or female, but for some reason the female form is often pronounced differently as Lozzie says.
Micha and Misha can be ale or female names, pronounced Mee sha. (the male "Misha" is the Russia and Hebrew version of Michael. )

Is it Mica - are they Mica Paris fans?

whodoyouthinksheis · 22/04/2020 21:01

I think Mika or Micah ?

woollylizard · 22/04/2020 21:02

It's mika or Micah

Quitthat · 22/04/2020 21:08

Mika or Mieke I would say are the "correct" spellings for that pronunciation.

Micah is biblical and traditionally male, pronounced My-cah I believe.

Love the name "meeka". Excellent choice! I'd prob go with Mieke personally.

I’ll pass this on and thanks to all for replying Grin

fallfallfall · 22/04/2020 22:28

as well as with an Anameika
in both circumstances the meika portion was pronounce meeka

PanicAtTheDiscLo · 22/04/2020 22:32

Mieke or Myke
It’s Dutch I think?

plantmum · 24/04/2020 07:48

The singer Mika is pronounced Meeka. Maybe that's where you heard it?

Spirali · 24/04/2020 08:33

Meike is pronounced like Myka I believe. Maybes it’s somewhere between Myka and Mika?

Anyway, I have a friend names Mika(Meeka) and I want to call me future daughter Maike 🥰

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 24/04/2020 09:42

Mieke - it's Dutch/German as pps have said.

The only problem is that sometimes people think she's a man called Mike using a yooneek spelling.

Was she the inspiration for the film Eurotrip? Grin

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 24/04/2020 14:31

This probably isn't much help...
I remember seeing a film about 2 student lovers. She was "meeka ". Cant remember him.
But they were sad at having to split up and go to uni. Eventually one changed their application to be at the same uni.
All accepted. "Man" got his letter, saying his room mate is Mike. Single sex buildings...
She gets her letter, saying she is with "man".
Meeka was spelled as Mike in the film.
You will have to ask your cousin about spelling.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 24/04/2020 14:33

Thanks breasted.
I thought I was imagining things.
Off to google eurotrip now

Ellmau · 24/04/2020 15:29

I would just ask them how they're spelling it.

elfran · 24/04/2020 15:33

I actually have a baby cousin called Meeka, with this spelling. She is adopted from a First Nations background, and I believe it's a traditional name/spelling from her community, though chosen by my cousin. I'm not sure if this spelling is used elsewhere, though.

I also had a friend growing up called Mika, with the exact same pronunciation. So I think either would get you where you want to be.

JKScot4 · 24/04/2020 15:34

I know a lovely wee staffy called Meeka 🐶
Mika for a girl would be ok
