So here are my names that I like so far. I'm pretty settled on my girls name which is Meadow..I know its unusual but it just feels right and I actually got the idea from a dream I had years ago.

The surname will be Desombre which is pronounced Desom.

Boys names..I've always liked Hunter but it has become more popular but still like it. Middle name will be Vicente which is OHs grandad name.

I also like
Archer
Euan
Grayson.

What's everyone's thoughts?

why not use the boy middle name as first name it's lovely.

allaboardthesinkingship · 15/04/2020 21:25

Really hoping you have a girl because that full name is just beautiful! I really like Grayson from your boys list. Meadow and Grayson go really well together as well so would work for any future babies!

roarfeckingroar · 15/04/2020 22:12

I'm English in London and would pronounce the surname as it is supposed to be OP. Not sure why so many people don't get pronunciation of french origin surnames.

This:
translate.google.co.uk/#view=home&op=translate&sl=fr&tl=en&text=desombre

and this: translate.google.co.uk/#view=home&op=translate&sl=en&tl=fr&text=desombre

Click on the Listen icon for both of them and neither is Desom.

Tillygetsit · 15/04/2020 23:48

Meadow is lovely with your surname. You know how to pronounce it and can tell others so that's a moot point really.
Your boys names aren't my style, but each to their own.

@MikeUniformMike

Oh for goodness sake. Jog on.

  1. Those links are the same.
  2. To an English speaker, that pronunciation would translate as Desom.
  3. She didn’t ask for opinions her surname and has made that quite clear.
  4. She doesn’t need to be told how to pronounce her own surname.

I honestly don’t know why some people hang around baby forums with the apparent sole purpose of being pedantic, condescending, mocking, unhelpful or rude. Which is what you come across as in every single one of your comments.

MikeUniformMike · 16/04/2020 08:51

@Blursula, get up the wrong side of bed today, did you?

Alwaysundecided · 16/04/2020 08:53

I absolutely love Meadow. Not really keen on your boys names especially Hunter. Archer would be my favourite though.
I like River Eden and Bodhi for boys if you like a hippy vibe.

Orphlids · 16/04/2020 09:37

@MikeUniformMike, I agree with @Blursula. It’s just weird that you would return to this post, hours later, to try to prove yourself right with a link, which is not in any way relevant to the OP’s question. Are you making a scrapbook entitled “How I made everyone on Mumsnet look silly and everyone thought I was clever and important”? You are prolific on these threads. I do wish Mumsnet gave us the option to block people, because your comments suck a little bit of joy and colour out of the world.

I LOVE the name Meadow, it's beautiful! I don't know why it's not more popular actually.

It's not for anyone else to change the pronunciation of your surname.Hmm As for sounding like a housing estate?! WTF. How rude and ignorant the PP was.

Jadegkeaney · 16/04/2020 18:21

Thanks everyone for your messages. I wasnt really looking for opinions on how my surname is pronounced and I'm more then happy to correct how its pronounced if needed..in regards to this @mikeuniformmike.. sombre has nothing to do with the name at all theres a De at the start Haha. Obviously they think they are correct but I honestly couldn't care less. I often get complimented on the surname and most people once they have heard the pronunciation get it! I actually avoided coming back on here because of how rude you were but reading the other comments it's just nice Grin

If I saw Vicente Desombre I would read it as Spanish. If saying that that makes me rude and ignorant then so be it. In that case, I obviously don't understand what rude and ignorant means.

I made no suggestions as to how you should pronounce your surname.

Blursula · 16/04/2020 20:17

@MikeUniformMike

If I saw Vicente Desombre I would read it as Spanish. If saying that makes me rude and ignorant then so be it. But that wasn’t the point you were making, was it? Vicente isn’t even the proposed first name. And you actually said at first you thought the surname was French.

I made no suggestions as to how you should pronounce your surname. You said you would pronounce the r at the end. You then took the time to return with links to suggest she is mispronouncing her own name. Which had nothing to do with the OP’s request and was frankly bizarre.

I obviously don’t understand what rude and ignorant means. I completely agree. Especially since four people, the OP included, have said you are rude.

MikeUniformMike · 16/04/2020 20:40

Actually, my first thought was that Vicente was Italian. It can be Spanish or Italian. OP said Spanish so I thought OK that's three possible pronunciations - the italian one, which wouldn't apply, and two spanish ones. If you put a name like Gabriel as a front name, the whole name would look spanish. It's not an issue, it's not a criticism, it is an observation. Vicente is terrific, and I love the association.

I in no way suggested that the surname was mispronounced, but if I were to look it up, google translate would not give me the OP's way of saying her surname. It's her name, she knows how she says it. Google translate gets things wrong sometimes.

If I didn't have a background in languages, I would probably read it with an English accent and get it horribly wrong.

What amazes me about this place is how posters don't actually read things properly and start attacking other posters.

Blursula · 16/04/2020 20:53

@MikeUniformMike you’re right, the problem isn’t your rudeness, the problem is everyone else not reading your posts properly Hmm

Just a few days ago you were mocking someone else’s surname on a different thread which ended up being deleted because the OP deregistered after comments like yours.

Anyway I think we have derailed this thread enough.

Good luck OP!
