Hi everyone,

We chose an unusual name for our daughter mostly because I've always loved it (and still do). My husband really liked it too but was wary about pronunciation in the UK. It's a French name, and we do have a French connection.

He was right Sad

She's 8 months old now and she does suit the name, but no one here says it right and I'm finding that more grating than I thought I would.

Her name is Anouk. Pronounced "ah-NOOK", nook rhymes with Luke.

Be honest: is she going to hate us for it? What do you think of the name and how would you say it?

I don't know why I'm posting this because it's too late to change it anyway, but maybe someone will have something nice to say to cheer me up. I do still really love the name in theory but I'm just worried that the pronunciation thing will be a pain for her forever. I didn't really think it would prove to be so problematic.

Thanks and I hope you're all doing well.

Love it

BabloHoney · 13/04/2020 15:40

I think it’s really nice. Could you shorten to Annie?

Redtartanshoes · 13/04/2020 15:40

It’s nice and I’d know how to pronounce it

MissBax · 13/04/2020 15:40

I would pronounce it how you've said, how are others saying it?

chickenyhead · 13/04/2020 15:41

I like it and would have pronounced it exactly as you said. I can't think of a different way of pronouncing it from that spelling. Maybe you have been surrounded by illiterate people.

Whatsyourflava · 13/04/2020 15:41

This could be a sign of PnD that you’re obsessing about this (take it from someone who’s been there)
Do you even have a name in mind of what you’d change it to?

userabcname · 13/04/2020 15:41

Oh I like it! It's lovely!

erised · 13/04/2020 15:41

I like it, wouldn't have a problem pronouncing it myself.

Maybe come up with a cute nickname for her or shorten it to Annie/Ani/Ana?

pontiouspilates · 13/04/2020 15:42

It's a gorgeous name and I would have no trouble pronouncing it. As PP said, you could go for Annie as a nn, but I really don't think it's a tricky name!

KavvLar · 13/04/2020 15:42

Love it.

Kungfupanda67 · 13/04/2020 15:43

I’d pronounce it like that if I saw it written down.

My son’s called Finley and people mispronounce that, I think you run the risk with lots of names so don’t worry about it.

PolloDePrimavera · 13/04/2020 15:43

Gorgeous name.

HandfulOfFlowers · 13/04/2020 15:43

How are people pronouncing it? I would say it exactly as you wrote, and so would everyone I know.

Crabbo · 13/04/2020 15:43

I really like it, but I admit I would have said it to rhyme with book - is that how most people mispronounce it?

Veterinari · 13/04/2020 15:43

It's lovely and easy to pronounce - how are people saying it?

bloodywhitecat · 13/04/2020 15:43

It's a beautiful name

popcorndiva · 13/04/2020 15:43

I automatically pronounced it how you said. Not sure how it can be said another way ?

MasterCat · 13/04/2020 15:44

I love it

Hercwasonaroll · 13/04/2020 15:44

I'm not mad keen on the name. She's young enough to change it if you really don't like it or think it doesn't suit her.

Annie is a cute NN.

Rebelwithallthecause · 13/04/2020 15:45

I love it

lanbro · 13/04/2020 15:45

Haha see for me book and luke rhyme, I would pronounce it how you describe though, it's no so unusual as to be unheard of so I would have thought most people would pronounce it correctly.

I like it!

Butterfly84 · 13/04/2020 15:46

I would have pronounced as you said. I don't personally like it, I think it's very wooden sounding like two sounds awkwardly plonked together (sorry).

If you stick with the name, your DD will meet lots of people who struggle to or just incorrectly pronounce her name. I know of a lot of people who freak out a bit if they have to say a name that isn't typically British. But, if you love the name then I would say, just stick with it. She's your daughter and you've given a name that you and your DH love.

fruitpastille · 13/04/2020 15:47

I love it and know of another one but they pronounce to rhyme with book/look rather than Luke.

bettybea · 13/04/2020 15:47

Absolutely lovely name. Like in Chocolat! Am adding to my own list I like so much.

TheLovelyOtherDinosaur · 13/04/2020 15:48

I don’t understand how you would pronounce it any other way?!
Don’t change it. It’s a beautiful name and it’s lovely to have something different.
