We are Welsh and looking for some lovely names for either sex. We aren't totally set on using a Welsh name but the right one may sway us Daffodil

I quite like Aelwyd. Reminds me of Aelwyd yr Urdd, the family sitting in front of an open fire, and a great big slab of stone with Pero sitting on it keeping warm. Siblings could be called Procar and Rhaw-Dan.

Oh my! wamiz.co.uk/dog/advice/20247/welsh-dog-names-find-inspiration-for-your-dog-or-puppys-name. Previous welsh names list criticisms apply. no Gelert or Pero?

Saeth only beats Sarff by a whisker. The DDs got off lightly.

Blimey, I wish people would do their research before they write articles.

Welsh pets in my family were Siwan, Nansi and Twm, all cats.

I wanted to call our cat Cadwalladr (or Catwalladr) but we ended up with a queen. I also wanted Archimedes, but again, queen, and also an uncooperative DH who thought I was bonkers. Then someone he knows had a DS and named him Archimedes.

I wonder if there's a little Sarff running around somewhere?

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 10:00

Nah, she's slithering around.

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 10:02

Oh Caffi, I had a pet with one of those names, and it wasn't the welsh one. That could out me.

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 10:04

I wanted to rename DCat Llew but the name he has suits him and he wasn't a kitten when I rehomed him.
Obviously, if I had a dog I'd want to call him Blaidd.

Sorry if this has been said already, but Haf doesn’t have the accent on the a. Hâf is not correct. It’s Haf.

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 14:24

@Theresnobslikeshowb, It's not Ceinwyn, it's Ceinwen. Ceinwyn isn't a name and if it was, it would be assumed to be a man.

CaffiSaliMali · 09/04/2020 15:20

Nah, she's slithering around Grin

Great minds, Mike, great minds. Llew is an excellent name for a cat, and Blaidd for a dog. Dcat kept her rescue name in the end as it suited her, and the lady was very fond of her, explained the significance of the name and asked us not to change it. We didn't have the heart to rename her! Rescue lady was fabulously eccentric, she had previously named cats Kitler, Pussolini and Ben Purr.

I always forget about Emlyn and Gruff, but really like the names. I worked with an Emlyn in England years ago and I was the only one who could say it. Everyone else said it was too complicated... Hmm

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 15:33

Er (affect Scouse accent), But there's Emlyn Hughes!

Great names for cats. There's also Jacob Rhys Moggy, Chairman Miao, Fidel Catstro...

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 15:49

@CeriBerry, you are correct, Haf doesn't have an accent. Neither does Wyn.

CeriBerry · 09/04/2020 16:09

@MikeUniformMike it’s a bugbear of mine- I know several actual Hafs (either first or middle name) with the ‘to bach’ as it’ll always be to me, and I’m always itching to tell them it’s wrong, but try not to out of politeness!

Not hard to guess what my name is. I do get people pronouncing it wrongly fairly often, but it doesn’t bother me and I’m proud to have a Welsh name, so it wouldn’t put me off using one!

MikeUniformMike · 09/04/2020 17:26

I can't think of anyone who has the circumflex but it is quite common as a middle name. Caryl P J used to do a sketch about a teenger from the Bala are ... if anyone remembers it please send me a link.

Apparently no 201 in the most popular names of England and Wales in 1900 was a welsh name. I thought it was a fairly unusual name that had become popular in the last few years and as it was an ex-boyfriend's Mam-gu's name I was curious.
