Rory?

What do people think of this? I have always loved the name but as always find myself playing devil's advocate when a decision is required...!

My criteria are in no particular order:

Scottish
Doesn't end in "S" or "sh"
Doesn't sound like a surname
Not too popular (I live abroad so Rory not common here)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I also have a Rory and people seem to love his name!

TenThousandSpoons · 01/04/2020 22:18

I like the name. Sweet on a boy and nice on a man too.

The only drawback I can think of is a lot of children have trouble pronouncing r for quite a while.

Verily1 · 01/04/2020 22:23

It’s so common! Now in the top 10 boys names.

Robert
Callum
Malcolm
Andrew/Drew
Bruce
Clyde
Finlay
Lachlan
Skyler

Love it. Got one ☺️

@Whatsyour yes due in September, I already used my "best" names on my first kids but DH vetoed Rory last times and has now had a change of heart!

Yes the fact that it is very common now bothered me quite a bit, mainly because the surname is a really common one too so I don't want them to one of 300 Joe Bloggs when they are older. But where we are now there have been not
More than 2 babies called Rory in the last ten years, so definitely not common here, and I don't know any friends or family with the name.

@Verily yes I agree it being very popular in the uk did put me off! But I can't see us moving back in the next 10 years at least. I guess it do worry it will date a bit being so common now, I already feel like I know so many babies called Finley, even though I really like the name it already feels a bit dated since they are all 5-10 years old now.

Sounds posh and Scottish.

HolyMerlot · 01/04/2020 22:53

One of the nicest, kindest, most fabulous people that I have ever know had that name, but spelt Rhori Star

badg3r · 01/04/2020 22:56

@Cheesy haha half right I guess!

It just made me think of the vet on cbeebies 😂 but he is a nice chap if that helps! I like it though 😊

SallyWD · 01/04/2020 22:58

Love it! Great name for a boy and a man. Sounds friendly to me.

Dollywilde · 01/04/2020 23:00

I love it but it’s my brother in laws name so could use it sadly.

Ginandplatonic · 01/04/2020 23:04

Love it. Wanted it for 4th DS but DH vetoed.

Only thing I would say is that DS turned out to have enormous difficulty saying R (along with many other sounds) so it’s just as well we didn’t go with Rory - would have been a nightmare for him.

We now have a dog called Rory instead and I still love it!

MorbidMuch · 01/04/2020 23:04

I love it! I haven't come across too many in recent years down my way. Probably one per every other year group.

Longdistance · 01/04/2020 23:05

I love Rory as a name. Two friends (who don’t know each other) have Rory’s. One is Scottish, the other isn’t.

badg3r · 01/04/2020 23:15

@Ginandplatonic yes I was a bit worried about difficulty with pronunciation, but I tested it on my other kids today and at least they can both say it...!

Love it.

sashh · 02/04/2020 04:10

I know two, one mid 20s, the other 1.5 years. I like it, unusual without being 'out there'

Alwaysundecided · 02/04/2020 14:58

I have one and I love it. I struggled to find another name I loved as much for DS2. It ticks all the boxes, suits a baby a teenager and a man and I think it sounds friendly too.

JanewaysBun · 02/04/2020 14:59

Love it but for a girl

PlantPotting · 02/04/2020 20:25

Interesting to hear you’ve already used your “best names” OP
But sounds like you’ve had your heart set on Rory for a long time

midsomermurderess · 03/04/2020 21:17

Lovely name. What about Euan as an alternative?
