Camilla or Effie?

DH and I have a list of 4 names, one is my favourite (Jemima) but he isn't keen, one is his favourite but I'm not keen (it's Alexa...poor kid living in a technological future with a name that will spark up home automation everywhere she goes!! Hmm) and then we have 2 that we both like and probably will end up going for one or the other.

So which of them do you prefer - Camilla (nicknames either Cami or Millie) or Effie?

If Effie would you use Effie as the full name or as a nickname and if a nickname any ideas on what the full name could be (not keen on Elizabeth or Euphemia)?

Middle names Violet Alice after family members if that makes a difference Smile

I know a lovely Effie, short for Seraphina

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 23/03/2020 18:47

Dislike Effie.
Camilla is lovely as is Camille

Crookshanksthecat · 23/03/2020 18:50

I love Effie it's cute and individual, personally I like it as a shortened version of Elizabeth but it could work for Persephone, Serafina, Ophelia, or Elspeth.
I don't like Camilla, it's too rigid and dull and not keen on shortened versions - Millie (every second child I meet is called Millie) or Cam/Cami (not keen)

username1724 · 23/03/2020 18:55

Love Effie, Camilla is very dated.. Millie is nice enough though

Hippopotas · 23/03/2020 19:05

I prefer Camilla but i like a Camelia even more.

MikeUniformMike · 23/03/2020 19:10

Camellia is the correct spelling Hippo.

IVflytrap · 23/03/2020 19:11

I slightly prefer Effie. I think it could work as a nickname for Evelyn, as long as you pronounced it Everlyn (Evuhlin in rhotic accents, I think) rather than Eve-lyn. I think it's become popular enough, although still not popular, that it could work as a name in its own right, if you prefer.

I don't mind Camilla, but like Camille better. I prefer the shortening to be written Cammie over Cami, which reminds me of camisoles. Millie is fine as well.

MadameJosephine · 23/03/2020 19:14

Effie can also be short for Josephine

Ikeameatballs · 23/03/2020 19:16

I much prefer Camilla to Effie. However Josephine is lovely and would work with Effie as a nickname.

Maduixa · 23/03/2020 19:54

I prefer Camilla to Effie, but like Camille even more. I wouldn't throw out Alexa completely just because of the Amazon reference - could you use Alexandra (or even Alexis) - and then if Alexa is too much as a nickname there's Alex, Lexi, etc?

Pinkypink · 23/03/2020 20:09

Personally I love Camilla esp with Cami as nn.
Don't like Effie at all. I can't hear it without thinking f off.
Also, I really hate Evelyn. To me it is dated and dreadful. -apologies to parents of any little Evelyns

missmouse101 · 23/03/2020 20:16

Effie is terrible. It sounds like 'effing'. Camilla is lovely, and I like Cassia even more.

YeahRiiiiight · 23/03/2020 20:21

Vastly prefer Camille to Camilla...just more chic and less horsey.

Effie is awful. Sorry.

Gingerkittykat · 23/03/2020 20:27

Effie, old woman name. My Aunt Effie was Euphemia which is obviously horrible. It is a name I can see coming back though.

Camilla, awful since you are giving a new baby a middle aged name. Will she be a twinset and pearls type girl?

Jemima was the doll from Playschool and I immediately get a picture of her in my mind when I hear the name.

Alexa is a nice name but inadvisable now.

Astronica · 23/03/2020 23:10

Camilla is a great name, stylish and cool. Camilla Violet Alice sounds wonderful. Effie is okay but hard to live with I think. I'd use it as short for Ophelia, Josephine, Seraphine, but I see your DH only wants Effie.

Overseasmom100 · 23/03/2020 23:15

Camilla just reminds me immediately of C-Parker Bowles and Effie dont mean to be rude but Effie the Elephant.

But I love Jemima...so girlie and pretty

Cbeebiesrehab · 24/03/2020 12:11

I have an Effie...short for Evelyn. I understand it’s a bit marmite but I suits her to a T.

Flymetothestars · 24/03/2020 15:40

I love Jemima and Effie best

Dislike Camilla - horrid and too posho toff to me

KittyJune · 24/03/2020 16:35

LOVE Effie but it’s not a ‘Mumsnet approved’ name - it’s one of those names that people in the real world seem to love while MN posters don’t approve as it’s a nickname and you know how Mumsnet feels about nicknames and given names. However I think it’s lovely and I very much doubt that anyone would interrogate your daughter about what her name was short for... these days nicknames are used more often (or at least AS often) as the full versions - id not think twice about an Effie but would be a bit Confused about a Euphemia! I think Effie Alice Violet is amazing!

KittyJune · 24/03/2020 16:37

I also adore Jemima. I try to like Camilla but it just feels dated to me

TenShortStories · 24/03/2020 16:41

I really like Camilla so I'd go with that.

That said, what about Evelina nn Effie?

Camilla

girlsname · 05/04/2020 12:19

I really love Effie, but my husband vetoed as he said it sounded like 'f-off' or f-ing' :(
