The name Achilles?

Opinions; Partner thinks it's pretentious. I just like Greek names and love the stories surrounding him.

I worked with a bloke who named his son Achilles. It’s a bloody awe full name for a little English baby!!!
We also all associated it with Achilles’ tendon.

What about gluteus maximus?

There are lots of great Greek names that might be considered pretentious but would also be wonderful. That isn't one of them IMO.

Well she's not going to be ancient Greek, is she? It is, however, highly likely that OP comes from somewhere who's culture derives (in part) from them (since that is a lot of countries).

He's not my favourite Greek hero, but if you love it, OP, there is far worse out there. Classical names are common these days.

If you call it in your local park, people would presume it is a dog you are calling. Actually quite a good name for a dog.

I know how you feel, I love the Greek name Ptolemy but I woudn't use it.

Not the first Greek mythology name I'd choose just based on the story. Plus there are different ways to pronounce it. In French speaking countries it'd be Ash-eel.

If you know and love Greek history pick something else.

I don't find names from Greek mythology pretentious - but I wouldn't go with Achilles. The tendon, the heel etc

I knew one, brother Lysander, family weren't Greek just very middle class. It was pronounced Ack-ee-lees by most people...

I always preferred Hector, in every sense.

To be honest, there are very few characters from Greek or Roman mythology who didn't either behave atrociously or were treated atrociously, or both, so I've never been tempted to use one. Alexander and Helen are the big exceptions because they're both well established English names.

In modern Greek it's pronounced A-he-leas and no one would bat an eyelid at the choice in Greece. It's not popular but it is not rare either. You'll also come across Patroclos, Ectoras and Priamos. Greeks are rather proud of the Ancient Greek heritage and you come across Aristotelis, Socratis (a lot), Platonas (less so), Aristidis (a lot), Periklis, Iraklis, Ionas, Frixos, etc.

I have to say I would find Achilles more weird as a choice because it's not actually a name in common usage as a first name in either English or Greek.

Hector or Alexander would be better if you want an ancient name!

It's definitely too much. My DD's are Greek Cypriot and I lived there 10 years- didn't even meet an Achilles in that time.

I like it! DC2 has a name from Greek mythology and we aren't Greek. Technically my name is Russian and my parents aren't Russian. Really not an issue.

It's the name people use when taking the piss out of middle class parents and their children. Likewise Ptolemy.
