I have a colleague who is only ever Anthony and I have known a couple who just use that name with no shortening.

8by8 · 23/02/2020 18:19

I’ve known 3 Anthonys.

1 is always Anthony, 1 is Ant, one is Tony.

So I don’t think it’s inevitable.

TotesGodsWill · 23/02/2020 18:26

Most of the Anthony’s I know go by Ant rather than Tony so no Tony isn’t inevitable

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/02/2020 18:26

The only Anthony I know is Ant

MikeUniformMike · 23/02/2020 18:27

I know several Anthonys.
Some are Tony, some are Antony, several are Ant and a couple are AnTHony. Not keen on Ant, and AnTHony sounds wrong.

Anton is ok.

soundsystem · 23/02/2020 18:27

I know 3: One is a Tony, one an Ant and the other is only ever called Anthony!

Voxx · 23/02/2020 18:28

I don’t think it’s inevitable. I know 3 men with the name. 2 are always known as Anthony. One is always Ant.

DaisyDando · 23/02/2020 18:31

I misread it as a Tory, which was confusing. I have taught Anthonys and they were never abbreviated. It might be a regional thing though.

Flywheel · 23/02/2020 18:32

Most Anthonys I know end up going by Anto, but I think it's a Dublin thing

heath48 · 23/02/2020 18:34

I know two.1 is Anthony.2nd is Ant.

iklboo · 23/02/2020 18:38

I know a Tony, an Ant, an Anthony and a 'Toe'

pipilangstrumpfi · 23/02/2020 19:38

Ant 🐜?! Really?

pipilangstrumpfi · 23/02/2020 19:39

I like Anthony as it is! I wouldn't shorten it.

Chickenitalia · 23/02/2020 19:41

I think Ant is likely to be the more common short form now, thanks to Ant & Dec. The only Tony I know, that’s his given name. I know two Ants and one Anthony, always in full. If you want the full name and use it consistently it will stick, imo.

Bezalelle · 24/02/2020 11:01

Old Anthonies are Tony.

Young Anthonies are Ant.

Them's the rules.

Abelino · 24/02/2020 11:05

I read this as 'Is Anthony destined to be Tory'.
I agree that Ant is more likely than Tony, but I know a few young Anthonys who are called by their full name all the time.

HopeYouStepOnALego · 24/02/2020 11:09

My brother is an Anthony and he hates it, always has. He goes by Tony, though one friend calls him Ant. He refuses to answer you if you call him Anthony, especially if you sound out the 'th' like in the word 'thanks'.

Nowayorhighway · 24/02/2020 13:09

The Anthony I went to school with never shortened it.

PlantPotting · 24/02/2020 13:28

I read the same @Abelino 🤣

BohoBunney · 24/02/2020 13:39

just to echo others, Anthonys I’ve know have been Anthony or Ant. The only Tony I knew was a Tony on his birth certificate

Whatsyourflava · 24/02/2020 16:49

I think there are other nn options

Probably will get shortened though

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 24/02/2020 16:53

My nephew is Anthony to his mum, aunts and uncles, Ant to his cousins and friends, and Tony to people who don't know him very well. He prefers Ant over everything.

StormTreader · 24/02/2020 17:13

My brother is an Anthony and he's never been Tony in his whole life to my knowledge - he goes by Ant.

SumAndSubstance · 24/02/2020 17:32

No, not in this day and age.

mondler · 24/02/2020 19:00

The only 1 I know goes by Anthony
