Are these names too close?

Full disclosure, I'm sharing the real names.

So my sister has a 10 year old son Kai. She and her DH like short names, and also ones beginning with K as it really goes well with the surname.

Anyway, they've just found out they're having a girl which is great. One of their names that they are considering is Kyla.

So, its essentially Kai with a la on the end.

Too similar?

Yep way too similar. I went to school with a Rohan and Rohanna, always thought that was weird

SumAndSubstance · 15/02/2020 22:56

It’s pretty similar, but what are you planning to do about it?

CalleighDoodle · 15/02/2020 22:56

Have they asked you to canvass for opinions?

BabyNamey · 16/02/2020 00:14

DH and I were at theirs for dinner this evening and they announced a baby girl, which was lovely.

Then they started rhyming off names and one was Kyla. We both said it's lovely, and we genuinely do think so. But they were concerned they're too similar and asked what others would think. I said I wasn't sure, so asked here...

Yes they are too similar. Saying that I know if a Danielle and Daniel and a Jodie and a Joe.

Some short name ideas to take back to them.
Kayla.
Kate
Keri
Faye
Tia
Jade

DramaAlpaca · 16/02/2020 00:34

Well yes, they are very similar. But it's not your baby so it's nothing to do with you, really.

Ninkanink · 16/02/2020 00:45

Yes they are too similar.

SunnySully · 16/02/2020 00:47

I know a brother and sister called Alan and Alana - their dad is also called Alan.

BabyNamey · 16/02/2020 00:58

A whole load Alan's going on there, @SunnySully!

Yeah they’re very similar, Kyla will most likely be shortened to Ky by her friends.

Double3xposure · 16/02/2020 01:05

Does she know you’ve put this identifying info online? Because anyone who knows them will recognise them and you.

Weffiepops · 16/02/2020 01:18

In my family there's a lee and Lisa and that's ok

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/02/2020 08:37

In fairness to the OP there are probably an extremely high number of people out there who have 10 year old Kais...it’s not that identifiable. She also said she told her sister she was posting here.
Anyway, yes far, far too similar!

BabyNamey · 16/02/2020 09:10

@Double3xposure not really the point but yes she does, and has asked for opinions.

We went to school with siblings (three of them) who had VERY similar sounding names beginning with J so she I think she has this in mind.

Sunny I know a michael and michelle, children of Mick.

I know a stephen and stephanie. Stephen, the first born, always knew his mum wanted a girl and had her girls name chosen for years before getting pregnant.

I think there are so many other much nicer names than Kyla, why choose it when it is already so similar to their son’s name.

IVflytrap · 16/02/2020 09:51

I think it's too similar, as it's the same one syllable sound with an ending added. How about:

Kayla (still a bit similar, but not as bad)
Kira / Keira
Kezia
Kirsten / Kirsty
Keeley / Keelin
Kate / Katie
Katrin
Kathryn

BabyNamey · 16/02/2020 10:15

Yes, I agree. Will report back to her. Thanks!

Friend has an Alice and an Alex. Bad idea, endless confusion over who is being called or spoken to!

Omashu · 16/02/2020 13:42

Of course they’re too similar Confused I’m surprised you or they had to ask!

Wintersun13 · 18/02/2020 19:14

Yeah bit too close, pity as Kyla is lovely.

How about Layla or Mila or Ayla instead ? Or maybe Shiloh ? Dahlia ? Zayna ?
