My DH is half French so I've been indulging in French girl names and like Adélie, Jolie and Joelle.
Middle name with be Claire.
Opinions on my list welcomedand rate each one, thank you.

Adelie is beautiful and my definite favourite. Jolie is nice although not to my taste.

I don’t like Joelle at all personally, it doesn’t sound French to me it sounds like the name of an American country singer or something. I’m picturing Cletus from the Simpsons calling his daughter that, sorry.

Poundcakelindsay · 15/02/2020 13:17

@MyNewBearTotoro yes I do know what you mean, I can see how it sounds slightly American moreso than French. Good point. Thank you.

An Adélie is a type penguin - which is the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the name just now. I actually didn’t know it was a french girl’s name too. Do you live in France? Names will have different connotations in different countries.

I prefer Jolie out of the three.

mynamechangemyrules · 15/02/2020 13:29

Adelie was a penguin to me too, didn't realise it was a girls name!
So many beautiful French girls names, you'll have a wonderful pick of them all.

satsumasunrise · 15/02/2020 13:30

Jolie means pretty so I think that would be a bizarre name.

Don't like the other two either, sorry.

TatianaLarina · 15/02/2020 14:29

Jolie like Belle, Beau and Grace are names that can mock the owner.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 15/02/2020 14:39

It would be refreshing and cute to see Jolie used as a first name! Its beautiful like its meaning!

I do think my favorite is Adelie though. Stunning and not common.

Joelle is the female version of Joel so I'm surprised it gets such a bad rep. But I can see the point that it sounds country American (and I'm American). I think Ellie, May, Joline, Blanche, Billie, Ellen, Marjorie are all in that camp but names evolve and perceptions change.

MikeUniformMike · 15/02/2020 14:47

Penguin, Joe-Elle and Joe-Lee.
No to all of them.
Pick a nice French name that doesn't sound naff in a British accent.

user1493494961 · 15/02/2020 14:49

They're all very frilly, I'm sure there are nicer names.

EllaWallace · 15/02/2020 15:12

Adelie stands out to me as the nicest :-) it also goes really nicely with Claire.

TheHagOnTheHill · 15/02/2020 15:18

Marie Clare.

Ellmau · 15/02/2020 16:02

Joelle won't sound American if you pronounce the J in the French way.

foxystoatfoxypig · 15/02/2020 16:11

Adélie is beautiful OP!

vitaminC · 15/02/2020 16:17

None of these would actually work in France, I'm afraid.
Adéli is the name of the social security website, Joëlle is very dated - rather like Barbara or Susan in the UK - and Jolie isn't a name, it's just the French word for "pretty".
I think your French in-laws will be quite bemused if you choose any of these Confused

MikeUniformMike · 15/02/2020 19:44

You can pronounce the J in a french way, but in the UK very few other people will.

Avoid Gisele for that reason. Jiz might not be an appropriate nn.

NameChange30 · 15/02/2020 19:50

What vitaminC said!

I'm guessing you haven't discussed any of these with your DH?

Did he grow up in France, UK or a mixture of the two?

lottiegarbanzo · 15/02/2020 19:53

Adelie penguins. Is it also a name? Adele and Adela are both lovely names.

NameChange30 · 15/02/2020 20:02

I know young French (or half French) girls with the following names:

Adele
Amelie
Charlotte
Daphne
Lily
Louise
Romane
Sidonie

The top 10 girls' names in France are almost all popular in the UK too (although to be fair the French are often a generation behind Wink)
Emma
Jade
Louise
Alice
Chloe
Lina
Rose
Léa
Anna
Mila

sawyersfishbiscuits · 15/02/2020 21:13

I really like Jolie. I also like Noèmie like Noèmie Lenoir.

IHeartKingThistle · 15/02/2020 21:16

What about Noelle? I love that.

Cbeebiesrehab · 16/02/2020 15:44

Like Jolie!

Charis1503 · 16/02/2020 15:59

Not a huge fan of them but adelie is the best..

How about...

Elodie
Coralie
Fleur
Madeline
Eveline
Delphine
Adeline
