Choosing a name for our 3rd girl

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 27/01/2020 10:23

My husband and I are thrilled to have a third baby girl on the way. But we used up our favourite names on the first two and although have plenty that we like, haven't got a stand out favourite this time. Please comment on our ideas!

We already have a Liesl Evelyn Maria and a Giselle Harriet.

For the third baby, middle name will be Kathleen (we like to choose family names for middle names).

First name ideas are:
Lydia
Heidi
Alina
Helena
Florence
Lavinia/Livinia
Orla

My husband is a Australian born but his parents are Swiss and Polish. I am Australian born but with Irish, Scottish and English grandparents.

Of those, I think I would go for Lavinia or Orla (but I would spell Orlagh.

Helena ( Hel-lay-na proununciation) is lovely.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 27/01/2020 10:31

@Thetigeronthewobbelboard yes I believe that is the traditional spelling which I would usually prefer, but also conscious of living in Australia and not wanting her to have to spell it out constantly.

@ikeakia that is definitely my preferred pronunciation 🙂

My daughter has Kathleen as a middle name too after a much loved family member.
I love your other daughters names too.

Lydia - Love this. I know a few of all ages from adult to pre school, but not over common. I think it's a name that suits all ages.
Heidi - One of my favourites. I only know two, and both are lovely. Also brings back happy childhood memories as I absolutely loved the "Heidi" television series/ film.
Alina - Beautiful. I think this would fit perfectly with your other daughters names.
Helena - I know a Helaina (pronounced Helayna) and it's so pretty.
Florence - I like this, but know quite a few, and most get shortened to Flo.
Lavinia/Livinia - Pretty. I've only ever met one Lavinia.
Orla - Also like, but not as much as your others.

You have great taste in names! I can understand why it's a hard choice.

Here are some suggestions. Don’t know if they’re very suitable really. I love Florence and Orla. Those 2 are my favs especially Florence

Willa
Imogen
Sadie
Edith / Edie
Margaret /Maggie
Clementine/ Clemmie
Roxanne/Roxanna
Pearl
Delilah
Ottilie (Ottie)
Cora
Eliza
River
Winter
Jemima
Holly
Cleo

MrsBertBibby · 27/01/2020 10:55

Of your list, Alina. Not mad keen on the others, they're OK. Alina Battle Angel!

Orla and Helena would be my second choices.

Lavinia is dreadful. Florence and Lydia are so English next to Liesl and Giselle.

LizzieAnt · 27/01/2020 11:06

Hi, love your name choices, but just wanted to let you know that Orlagh is not the traditional spelling of Orla. The older traditional spellings are Órfhlaith and Órlaith. It's Órla in modern Irish. All are pronounced the same - Ore-la. Lots of people don't use the fada (the accent) over the first letter and that's very widely accepted even within Ireland, and certainly more convenient if you don't live there. However, strictly speaking, neglecting the fada does change both the pronunciation and meaning of the name (from Ore-la to Uhr-la and from 'golden princess' to 'vomit' respectively!) However, as I said, probably more convenient without the fada and certainly it's very widely used like that even within Ireland. It's always pronounced as if the fada was there though, Ore-la, golden princess.

Ah thanks for that @LizzieAnt, I hadn't got as far as looking up the details yet but good to know. Pretty though it is, it's my husbands least favourite on the list so chances are we won't use it. But appreciate the info anyway.

@Whatsyourflava I absolutely love Delilah but sadly my husband vetoed it 😢

Thanks @Pigsmightfly212 it sounds like we have similar taste.

@MrsBertBibby Alina is definitely a strong contender. Was on the list for both of our other DDs.

You have to choose Heidi! It goes so well with your other girls' names Smile

lovelyjubilly · 27/01/2020 12:08

My favourite from your list is Heidi (by a long way) but I think Helena goes better with your other daughters' names.

userabcname · 27/01/2020 12:15

I think Heidi or Lavinia go best with your other names (love Giselle by the way!).

damptowel · 27/01/2020 12:39

What about Vivienne or Lilian?

All your listed names are good and go well, it's hard to choose! Heidi would probably be my first pick, followed by Florence or Helena (though would have pronunciation confusion issues, if that's a concern.)

NewName54321 · 27/01/2020 12:48

I was going to suggest Heidi before seeing it was on your list.

I like all your names, but Alina and Lydia have too many similar sounds to Liesl for me.

3rdNamechange · 27/01/2020 12:54

Love Lydia , what about Eleanor ? Never had a daughter but Liesl is my absolute favourite name.

Whatsyourflava · 27/01/2020 12:57

Maybe if you keep gently mentioning the name Delilah @Zippetydoodahzippetyay

I didn’t use to like it believe it or not. It suddenly grew on me and now it’s a def too 5 name of mine. I just adore it now.

sel2223 · 27/01/2020 12:59

Heidi and Helena both go lovely with your other 2 names

Peachbubble · 27/01/2020 16:25

Lovely names OP for your girls. Liesl, Giselle and Heidi sound great together.

1Bobbinwinder · 27/01/2020 16:27

I think Helena is just a stand-out lovely name, very unusual these days but beautiful. Congrats on the third girl and I love your other names.

mumofthregirls · 27/01/2020 17:38

I have three DD so sympathise in choosing names. Out of your list my favourite and the one I think goes best with the other names is Heidi. I also really like Orla.
