Rebecca "Ruby"?

Can Ruby work as a nickname for Rebecca?

We are expecting baby number 4. We like longer names that can be shortened. I adore Rebecca but dislike Becky or Bex.

We already have Annabelle "Annie", Matilda "Maddie" and Beatrice "Trixie"

I know a Rebecca called Reb.

YasssKween · 27/01/2020 12:54

Why can't you call her Ruby? It's a lovely name. As is Rebecca but if you want Ruby then go for it! It's not the kind of 'silly' nickname you would be worried about them applying for jobs etc with which all my favourites seem to be, it's a great name!

diddlediddle · 27/01/2020 13:20

I know a Rebecca with nn Ruby, so yes, you can

FizzyGreenWater · 27/01/2020 13:59

It's a stretch. And she may well end up as Becky anyway! You might be better off pinning Becca on her from the start.

Have to say I think it's a shame to give her the more unusual Rebecca as a name then end up calling her Ruby - of which there are HUNDREDS!

Grufallosfriends · 27/01/2020 14:03

Rebecca is a beautiful name.

Ruby has become dull from overuse imo. I agree it would be a shame to call a Rebecca Ruby Hmm

Mumbassa · 27/01/2020 14:04

I think it could work definitely

HouseofLeaves · 27/01/2020 14:05

Have a friend called Rebecca, which in our school days became Becky Boo, and is now just called Boo in my head.

youngestisapsycho · 27/01/2020 14:09

I'm a Rebecca.. known to some as Becca, Bec, or aunty Bec Bec!
I HATE Becky tho... if people call me it I ask them not to Grin

NameChangeNugget · 27/01/2020 14:15

That’s like can Michelle be called Dave. It makes no sense, there isn’t a link. Ruby is lovely in its own right Smile

Biancadelrioisback · 27/01/2020 14:18

I also hate Becky. But my parents insisted on it being my nickname so I was Becky until my mid teens when I ended up being called Becca which they didn't like but ultimately, the person with the name gets to pick their own nickname. This is why I don't like "imposing" (for lack of a better word) nicknames on young children or picking a name purely because you like one of many nicknames.

If you like Ruby, call her Ruby. Don't shoehorn it into Rebecca.

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 27/01/2020 15:43

Oops Buffy is shirt for Elizabeth not Rebecca! Then I get it even less by the way. And honestly I dont get Ruby for Rebecca either. I just dont think it will stick or make sense. In school they will call her Rebecca and she will say no I go by Ruby. Or Rebecca will get out and she will be Bex or Becca.

I like both names and nicknames can of course be whatever you want but I think you'll ultimately be more satisfied with the name of you go with the name you really want to call her! I know the challenge is that your other daughters have longer names that beesley down into obvious nicknames. I have heard Ruby can be a nickname for Rebecca but I personally dont get it. I also clearly dont get Buffy for Elizabeth either so maybe just ignore me!! xo

mamablondie · 27/01/2020 17:16

Ruby is a noun so very much a name on its own. Personally don’t understand people saying it’s dull/overused compared to Rebecca.

It’s nowhere near as popular as it was ten years ago, in baby groups etc. Rebecca is a bit bland to my ears - sorry! X

Grufallosfriends · 27/01/2020 18:32

Ruby is nowhere near as popular as it was ten years ago

But as a result there are thousands of Rubys aged 10 and below. It will soon start to sound 'dated'

Rebecca has been so rarely used during the past 20 years or so that there aren't many young ones around and the name feels 'refreshing' imo

daisypond · 27/01/2020 19:25

Reba is a traditional short form, or Rivka, I think. It’s a traditional name in lots of countries.

Strugglingtoquit · 27/01/2020 19:55

No Ruby isn’t short for Rebecca, and it shouldn’t be.

If you don’t like any of the usual short forms I would avoid Rebecca. If you want Ruby then just use Ruby
