Thoughts on Thor, Rory, Ralph

What are everyone's thoughts on these names for a boy? I like Rory but my OH isn't keen. I liked Ralph a lot but hadn't realised it's an expression for being sick so that put me off a bit. Also I've seen 2 people on my social media name their babies this fairly recently and I'd rather avoid any names that might become the next popular top 10 names etc.

We both liked Thor but then after googling it I'm concerned it might give him too much of a reputation to live up to? I never thought of it in this way but don't know if other people will and find it funny if he grows up to be quiet and sensitive rather than loud & boisterous etc. Trouble is I'm really fussy with boys names (want something simple but unusual) and have already looked through the top 1000 on one site and didn't really like any of the others 🙈

I like Thor best.

Riv12345 · 27/01/2020 08:34

My husband is called Rory

FishCanFly · 27/01/2020 10:20

Thor is a cool name, i know a couple (not in UK though) but Avengers kinda spoils it now.

Cbeebiesrehab · 27/01/2020 15:46

Seriously dislike Thor, as you said it’s a very big name to live up to!!
Like Rory and like Ralph but I think it’s a bit marmite.

NC4Now · 27/01/2020 16:09

Thor's a bit much. I like it, but looking at my two teenage boys (and others I know) it could easily not suit them.
Ralph makes me think of Judy Bloom books.
Rory's nice but I like the Ruiri spelling better.

Thor is lovely!

Candyapple49 · 27/01/2020 19:22

Rory is lovely . I’m not keen on Ralph .
Thor is a no - too much pressure to be godlike !
I teach kids called Ace , and Perfection - and I think the same abut these - too much to live up to !

Love Rory, not keen on the other two

GiGi18 · 27/01/2020 21:43

Rory is becoming very popular. I've met several in baby groups in the last 6 months. I like Ralph. Not keen on Thor, too majestic sounding!

wishuponarainbow · 27/01/2020 22:55

Thor is a fairly popular dog name around here...sorry!
Love Rory

wishuponarainbow · 27/01/2020 22:58

Also like a pp said, Ralph reminds a certain age group of a Judy Blume book. I'm sure the line was "meet Ralph...my penis"

Woulditbeworth · 27/01/2020 23:03

Thor - no.

Rory is a lovely baby and grown up name. I know a Rory that are shortened to Ror, similar sound to Thor.

bluemoon2468 · 28/01/2020 17:58

I can't believe how many people are actually okay with the name Thor 😳 Sorry to be harsh, but imagine writing that on a job application/dealing with it as a teenager if you aren't the coolest, strongest most popular boy in school/EVER having to tell your name to anyone ever 😳😳😳

Lweji · 28/01/2020 18:00

Maybe Hulk instead of Thor?
No?

kjhkj · 28/01/2020 18:01

Thor is ridiculous in this country. Sorry OP but if you haven't seen any Avengers/marvel movies you're in the minority and even if you haven't he's a Norse God. He's been about a while!

PutYourLipsTogetherAndBlow · 28/01/2020 18:06

Please don’t call your child Thor - it’s cruel. Especially if he is of a weedy build and needs glasses say? School is hard enough without being saddled with a name like that!

Rory is a lovely name.

Ralph reminds me of the Judy Blume book where the guy’s name for his penis is Ralph - sorry!

Snuffkindle · 29/01/2020 09:57

Not Thor!
I know a Ralph. He is a hot rugby player. Until then I definitely thought of willies.
Rory is safe.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 29/01/2020 10:04

Thor is fine if you are Scandinavian, otherwise it’s seems like a bit too trying to be cool. I don’t personally like Rory or Ralph, but they are less of a statement.
