Juno, Matilda, Phoebe, Anna

I’m due very soon with our first DD (DC2) and we have struggled with names throughout the pregnancy (which is annoying, as naming DS was easy!). As per the thread title our top four are as follows, with a likely middle name of Elizabeth:

Juno - my personal favourite, DH not quite so keen. The (very) limited pool of people I’ve tried it out on have been a bit ‘meh’ about it and said they just think of the film. But is that really going to be a ‘thing’ as she’s growing up?!

Matilda - both like. I am not keen on Mattie or Tilly though, which puts me off a bit as I know you can’t really control nicknames - especially as they get older.

Phoebe - like but not sure I love. Not sure it goes well with our surname, which is also two syllables and has an ‘eee’ sound so the names would assonate (think ‘Phoebe Stevens’ - not actual name).

Anna - classic and lovely sounding but still not sure. Sounds a bit elegant and formal for a baby. Would Annie work as a nickname do you think?

We’ve deliberately kept from discussing names with friends and family so I’m really keen for honest feedback on our list.

Other name suggestions very welcome (although I think we may know every girl’s name in the world now 😆). Thanks!

All nice, but my favourites would be Anna and Matilda. If you're not sure on the nicknames for Matilda, go for Anna.

If Juno feels too bold for a first name, but you live it, additional middle name maybe? Anna Juno Elizabeth is pretty cool.

TatianaLarina · 23/01/2020 14:00

Anna is just so boring.

Phoebe, Juno and Matilda are my favs, Maud is a diminutive if you don’t like Matty or Tilly.

travellover · 23/01/2020 14:01

My favourite is Matilda

MarshaBradyo · 23/01/2020 14:03

Anna

userabcname · 23/01/2020 14:07

I think Anna is so boring (sorry!).
I really like Juno and Phoebe. Also I love Elizabeth - is there any reason that can't be a first name? If that could be in the running then it's my favourite.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 23/01/2020 14:10

Anna or Matilda. Phoebe is so over used.

daisypond · 23/01/2020 14:31

I really like Anna but probably not with Elizabeth as a middle name - it’s just too safe and traditional altogether. I would want more quirkiness in there somewhere.

campion · 23/01/2020 14:40

Nothing wrong with safe and traditional. Not sure why a child needs a quirky name unless it's to stand out in some way. Choose a name because you like it.

Of the 4 here I like Matilda and Anna. Not keen on Annie, especially if her name's actually Anna, which is more classy.

DramaAlpaca · 23/01/2020 14:42

I like all of them but Anna is my favourite.

NoSauce · 23/01/2020 15:56

Anna and Matilda are lovely. I don’t like Phoebe at all. Feeby. Nope. I agree that Juno is meh.

Enko · 23/01/2020 16:19

Always found Anna dull and boring and using Annie for me doesn't make it better.i do like Juno and I have Phoebe but she is an adult now I do still like the name. I do not like Matilda due to associations I have. Have you considered Julia?

CruCru · 23/01/2020 16:42

I like Juno and Anna. It doesn't sound as though you are super keen on Phoebe - plus it doesn't go very well with your surname. I like Matilda but it is very popular - I know several Matildas. Will it annoy you if people refer to your child as Matilda S / V / Q?

FizzyGreenWater · 23/01/2020 17:06

Anna nn Annie - amazing.

Sandsnake · 23/01/2020 20:49

CruCru I like Phoebe, but I don’t love it, or Matilda really. Although I think they’re both great names. For some reason, I find girls names really hard to get excited about when I could name 10 boys easily. Juno is the one that really ‘does it’ for me but DH is on the fence and I’m also really aware that people have quite marmite opinions on it! I don’t want to be too aware of what others think but at the same time don’t want half of the people I introduce her to to be thinking ‘wtf?!’. It’s so difficult! Again, thanks all for views Smile.

So surprised a PP said Annie wasn't a nickname for Anna! To me Annie is the obvious nn for Anna and two Annas I know get called Annie. Annie on its own sounds wrong to me, it's too cutesy.

Whatsyourflava · 23/01/2020 21:13

@bringbackfonzi I completely agree! Annie is def a nickname for Anna in my opinion.
I know loads of Kate’s and Charlie’s for example that sometimes get called Katie and Charlie. It’s the natural nickname

Howtotrainyourhamster · 23/01/2020 21:24

Anna is lovely - agree Anna and Annie are 2 separate names, and Annie is nowhere near as nice.

I like Juno, I don’t think the film will be on people’s minds much now (it was 10 years ago) and will be pretty irrelevant for your dd. I think the goddess might have been quite unpleasant though...

Like Phoebe - but it’s quite popular.

Really don’t like Matilda, previous poster summed it up with harsh and frilly at the same time!

ragged · 23/01/2020 21:37

I like Anna very much & quite dislike the others.
Which you don't have to agree with (btw my name is called dreadful by MNers on frequent basis, so I'm pretty thick skinned about names, and my kids have names MNers find horribly boring, too), I'm just surprised you put Anna with the others.

I think your true taste is more in the Matilda Juno Phoebe group. Phoebe is the most common. I've never met a Juno. Why is Juno trendy but not June?

MikeUniformMike · 23/01/2020 21:40

Anna.
Juno is too much.
Matilda too popular and I don't like Tilda.
Phoebe is nice but will be Phoebs.
Anna is pretty and classic.

A baby is only a baby or toddler for a short time but will be an adult for decades.

lisag1969 · 23/01/2020 22:15

Matilda.
Don't let people shorten it. X
