I just wondered for anyone called Charlotte, (or knows of any), which shortened version do you/ they go by?
Having a Charlie/ Lottie debate.
OH prefers Charlie. I prefer Lottie.
Trying to figure out which is most popular, or do you find that people call you one or the other regardless of the one you choose to go by?

Same length as what?

Mummylanie3 · 21/01/2020 20:27

I have Charlotte as the name for my dd due in April but I will be calling her Lottie as a nick name

Wheresthesandman · 21/01/2020 20:40

Lottie is not really an abbreviation. It's the same length.

It’s the same number of syllables and less letters than Charlie is Hmm
Your username is a work of genius though, @thatmustbenigelwiththebrie

I think both Charlie and Lottie are perfectly nice nicknames for Charlotte, OP. And Charlotte is a perfectly nice name on its own!

Rachel345 · 21/01/2020 21:11

I think what some are saying is that saying Lottie or Charlotte takes the same amount of time, they're both 2 syllables.

Personally I like Charlotte and wouldn't want a different nickname

ThunderR0ad78 · 21/01/2020 21:16

My daughters is an Annabelle, lots of possible shortened versions but she's never been called any!

I honestly like Charlotte as the full name best, but if I had to choose, it would be Lottie.

CareyFairy · 21/01/2020 21:17

Sharla is a diminutive of Charlotte, and not so widely used.
I've only met one.

Rachel345 · 21/01/2020 21:50

Sharla? That sounds like a completely different name.

What's wrong with Charlotte? Confused

SunbeamsOverhead · 21/01/2020 22:34

Charlie or Lotta.

Dyra · 21/01/2020 22:45

I'm a Charlotte. Most people go with the full name. Anyone who wants to can call me Char or Charlie. Never Lottie.

Most other Charlottes I've known did the same as I. All the rest went by Charlie. I've never known a Lottie.

lisag1969 · 21/01/2020 23:29

Lottie. X

Kokeshi123 · 21/01/2020 23:30

Most Charlottes go by "Charlotte" alone in my experience.
Charlie is gender ambiguous and Lottie is awfully twee.

lisag1969 · 21/01/2020 23:31

But I do prefer Charlotte. X

CharitySchmarity · 04/02/2020 21:07

I like both to some extent but think they suit very different personalities, and you can't predict which one will fit best until you know your child. However it's perfectly acceptable to use Charlotte in full - I know lots of people who do, including a relative.

LoisLittsLover · 04/02/2020 21:12

I wanted dd (7 weeks) to be Lottie on her BC but dh was very anti this and wanted Charlotte as a 'proper' name. So day to day she is Lottie and I imagine as this is familiar to her, it's the abbreviation she will choose as she gets old enough. Hate 'char' I'm sorry to say. Charlie is okay but Lottie is beautiful

mrwalkensir · 04/02/2020 21:16

I know a lot of very lovely Charlottes between 15-35, but it does get confusing at work when there are so many.... How about something similarish like Cara?

Lottieskeeper · 04/02/2020 21:20

My daughter has been known as Charlotte right from birth. All through the pregnancy I was planning to call her Lottie. But as soon as she arrived it was obvious that she needed to be addressed by her full name.

Now at 4 if anyone tries to call her anything else she puts them right with her full fore, middle and surnames.

newtothis20 · 04/02/2020 21:23

I love the name Charlotte - really feminine, strong and timeless. I know ones who use all nns you’ve mentioned but I personally like it as a full name better

Disneydarlings · 04/02/2020 21:28

I know two Charlotte's. Neither of them have their name shortened. Never understood people who shorten their children's name if you like the name Lottie or Charley that should be their name.

ivegotthisyeah · 04/02/2020 21:34

Well I have a lottie and I love her name! She's not a Charlotte just lottie and she totally suits it 💓

mogtheexcellent · 04/02/2020 21:44

7 charlottes in DDs class. Two are Charlotte surname, one Charlie, one lollie (no idea!), one lottie and the last one is known by her middle name.

Whatsyourflava · 06/02/2020 19:30

7 charlottes in DD class @mogtheexcellent gosh that’s a lot!! It’s actually been on a downward trajectory for the past 20+ years now though so it’d be very unlikely to happen these days. It’s now outside the top 10 and there’s literally thousands less charlottes each year than there was 20 years ago

EssentialHummus · 06/02/2020 19:45

I know a Charlotte nn Lottie. I really, really dislike that nickname, as against the very pretty name.

emilybrontescorsett · 06/02/2020 19:59

My relative gets Charlotte.

GenevaMaybe · 06/02/2020 20:03

I have a Charlotte. Here it is pronounced sharrr-LOT. She calls herself sha-YOT as she’s 2 and hardly say anything. Her big sister calls her cha-cha

mogtheexcellent · 06/02/2020 20:13

@Whatsyourflava

I'm assuming it's the princess Charlotte effect. Plus it's a nice name, not too posh, not too trashy and most people know how to spell it.

Her class also has 3 Harry's Grin but the other 20 kids all have different names. Smile
