Which of these two names do you like best? Middle name would be Timothy.
Thanks :)

Jasper, no contest. Otto is really not nice, and it doesn't go with Timothy.

Lavenderblues · 17/01/2020 15:08

Otto is beautiful ConfusedGrin?!

emmathedilemma · 17/01/2020 15:15

I've just read a book where the dog is called Otto so that's a no by association for me. Jasper is also a bit "pet name" for me too!

whatsyourflava will do! x

That would be a really useful comment if I'd asked if people thought if the two names we have chosen were suitable for pets or humans! :)

Sorry that's my pet (!) hate on naming threads. Obviously the OP doesn't think the names under discussion are only suitable for pets or they wouldn't be considering calling their child that. But it's so predictable that someone will feel the need to pass that comment. It's almost mumsnet bingo!

Otto looks and sounds strange, I prefer Jasper

Sleepyquest · 17/01/2020 15:54

I love Otto

november90 · 17/01/2020 17:28

@CeibaTree

I totally agree with your last comment! Sometimes people just can't help themselves but be negative and everyone can see it. Both names are beautiful (Otto my absolute fave) and they will suit your boy just perfectly because you have chosen it for him! ❤️

Pinksun12 · 17/01/2020 17:52

Otto! But Jasper is v cool too

CeibaTree · 17/01/2020 20:30

@november90 Aww thank you, that's a lovely thing to say :)

Otto for me. Jasper is one of my least favourite being honest. Names are names whether they are on an animal or a human so never mind any comments on that - I see it as a compliment that mine have dog names Grin but to be fair op this is a baby name forum so people will put what they think.

solitarythoughts · 17/01/2020 20:42

I really love both these names. Can't go wrong Smile

This is true, but if someone asks what you think of name A or name B, then what's the point of saying it's a pets name (and then not even saying whether you think it's a good pets name or not 😂). Even if someone just says they hate the name, that's more useful than the inane 'it's a pets name' comments!

We have an Otto and Jasper in the family.

Gogolego · 17/01/2020 21:15

Jasper definitely

Otto Timothy is to many Ts. Coming from someone who's name is too many of the same letter it is a bit full on at time's

MrsBertBibby · 18/01/2020 00:21

Well presumably, because that's what they think of the name? Confused

Streamside · 18/01/2020 00:46

Otto Timothy has a slightly odd sound to it.I love the name Timothy, could it not be the first name. Both Otto and Jasper match Timothy much better as middle names.

CeibaTree · 18/01/2020 08:23

Haha ok fair point, but my original OP asked which of the two names people liked best, not whether they thought they were better suited to pets :)

Streamside we wouldn't use Timothy as a first name - the name is to honour my much missed dad, not because we love the name as such.

Thanks again for your thoughts everyone, seems a fairly even split! Although I do note that some people hate both names! Guess we'll have to wait and see which name better suits when he arrives. Although my first son has a completely different name than what we had planned as we came across another name the night before he was born which we both loved straightaway!

I think the reason the 'it's a dogs name' comments are so frustrating is because you can call a dog anything! It's completely pointless. Fair enough if someone is suggesting Fido or Spot but not normal names in every day use for humans.

It's almost as bad as my biggest pet hate when someone says 'there was a boy at school I didnt like called Jasper so personally I wouldn't use it' Grin

I like both names OP. Jasper was top of my list but my DH sees it as quite a posh English name and he's Irish and it didn't work for him. I don't personally think of it as posh but I know it does have those connotations for some people.
I personally love the meaning, the beautiful Jasper gemstones!
