The singer is putting me off.

We’re due to deliver DD on Tuesday and I’m prettt much decided on the name. But the recent popular singer might be putting me off, I’m not sure. I chose the name because it’s not a popular one.. at least it’s not popular in my area and I like the more old fashioned type of names. I feel like because this singer has come about people will think that’s why I’ve chosen the name and/or it will become very popular now.

Name we’ve chosen is Mabel. (Not 110% set on it until we actually see baby as well aware she might not look like a Mabel when it comes to meeting her) but it’s the ‘one’ at the moment.

Would it put you off? Any other suggestions that are like Mabel but... not?

Mavis and Ethel are awful. Mabel's OK, quite sweet, never heard of a singer called Mabel though.

I’ve never heard of Mabel. Use it if you like it.

Someone somewhere will have the same name whatever you choose so pick one you love regardless!!
My dd has the same name as a character in a soap 30 years ago!! Not been mentioned for about 28 years!!
Ds has a name that's a famous surname. No issues.
Connections everywhere - unless it's a known criminal go ahead.
Imo.

I have never heard of the singer Mabel, but I don’t think it’s a problem. DD was born very shortly after Amy Winehouse died. DD is called Amy, but not interested has ever said “like Amy Winehouse?”. Mabel is a common enough name not to be exclusively associated with the singer.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 29/12/2019 20:16

I know Neneh Cherry's daughter is Mabel and so is Tracey Ullman's, but I doubt anyone here remembers Tracey Confused

I just don't get this trend for old lady names. They're names from my grandparents' generation and I really can't feel them for little babies today. I don't feel the names of my parents' or my own generation either come to that.

AlphaJura · 29/12/2019 20:22

I thought you were going to say Rita (one of my ideas for dd2). I wouldn't let the singer put you off, if anything I think it brings the name a bit more up to date and people won't think of it as such an 'old lady' name which can be the case with some of these names. I like it! It's not overused either.

Well I thought of the kids show gravity falls with the name Mabel , so you'll always get something to associate that you hadn't thought of.
Don't over think it

Bella?

Mabel is a name that I think you need to be happy that there is a modern link to it in the pop world rather than being annoyed with it, because otherwise it is extremely dowdy. I'm trying to image me if that had been my name when I was in school... I would have been bullied so much!

Justneedatemporaryname · 30/12/2019 02:00

This is so strange and I have only realised it through thinking about this subject, but only from this post did I ever associate the name 'Amy' to anybody else. I guess it's a very common name so I wouldn't associate it with anyone other than the person I am referring to. So I have never met an Amy and thought of Amy Winehouse.

OddshoesOddsocks · 30/12/2019 02:00

Never heard of her but the name is lovely.

I secretly quite like Mavis but prefer Maeve

Think of all the Jude’s out there.. I once overheard a young primary aged kid being introduced as Jude to an I assume an old friend of his parents & immediately, he got ‘hey jude’ in the tune of the song. If looks could kill.. 😂

I like Mabel. I know of the singer but certainly wouldn’t put the two together & anyway, who cares. Just say no, it’s a name we liked!

SemperIdem · 30/12/2019 23:08

I am another who is behind the time.

Mabli is the Welsh form of Mabel, if you want the same but different.

I think you’re safe from people associating the name Mabel with the singer, unless you move in very music aware circles.

fllinn · 30/12/2019 23:16

Mabel is a lovely name, people won't think of a singer especially in a few years time. Shortly after naming DS2, a kids TV show was brought out with the star of the show (who was a bit silly) having DS2's name. He's 8 now and nobody has referenced it for about 7.5 years because he owns his name. It's not a rare name, in top 50. I don't think those associations are an issue and I'm sure you'd forget all about the singer over time.
