Not currently pregnant but a total baby names enthusiast. I have loads of girls names I like but find boys names much more challenging to pick ones I absolutely love. My list contains :

Ralph (pronounced Rayf - like Ralph Fiennes)
Rollo
Jasper
Hugo
Victor
Guy
Ambrose
Ernest
Bram/Abram
Marcus

Give me your opinions! Any other boy names I might like?

I like Ernest and Hugo!

Elias?
Hector?
Edgar?
Bernard?

Ralph will get pronounced " Ral-f " not "Ra-f"

99% of people will assume that's how its pronounced and the poor kid will spent his entire life correcting people ...

I know a dog called Rollo so automatically think of that.

Jasper, hugo and guy are lovely names.

If you like things a little more unusual...

Avery, Rocco or Ellis

Jellybean100 · 26/12/2019 16:44

Jasper & Guy

Yellow1c · 26/12/2019 16:47

The 'Ralf' rather than 'rafe' thing would be annoying. How could it be spelled to make it clearer? Just 'Rafe'? I don't like he way that looks as much but I can totally see it would help with pronunciation.

I like Bram and Rollo.
I’d maybe put Abraham on the birth certificate but use Bram all the time.
What about Mungo? Jonty/Jonathan?

TheVanguardSix · 26/12/2019 16:49

Denys is another one I like- as in Denys Lasdun, the architect.
Jarlath as well is a good name.

PlantPotting · 26/12/2019 16:55

Ralph (pronounced as it’s spelt) is common enough now that you’d be continually correcting people on that alternative pronunciation. You should definitely spell it Rafe if that’s the pronunciation you want

PlantPotting · 26/12/2019 16:55

How about Rafferty? Nn Raffy?

reginafelangee · 26/12/2019 16:59

Sorry they all sound quite pretentious

Charis1503 · 26/12/2019 17:20

Ive seen it spelt "Rayph" - if thats preferable to Rafe...

NeutralJanet · 26/12/2019 17:21

I like Marcus and Victor.

Disillusioneddaisy · 26/12/2019 17:22

Out of that list the only only one I like is Marcus.

NewInTown08 · 26/12/2019 17:26

I don't like any of them.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/12/2019 17:31

Jasper is ok. But the list is generally a bit try hard. Those are all the sorts of names given to make characters in a Penny Vincezi novel which sort of says it all.

Yellow1c · 26/12/2019 17:53

Do the names sound try-hard because they're all together? Like a baby Guy (which is my uncle's name) surely isn't try-hard? Ernest is my grandfather's name.

What makes a name pretentious do you think? Is it all just personal viewpoint?

Tillygetsit · 26/12/2019 22:55

I love Bram/Abram. That's what this love will be called.

Astronica · 27/12/2019 01:45

My favourite is Ralph or Rafe. The only ones I'm not keen on are Guy and Ambrose. Rollo is very cool!

Sholto
Mungo
Caspar
Brennan
Dashiell

DramaAlpaca · 27/12/2019 01:51

The only one I like at all is Marcus.

Jasper, Victor and Hugo aren't too bad, but the rest are not to my taste at all.

Grufallosfriends · 27/12/2019 08:04

I love Marcus and Victor.

The only one I don't like is Guy.

RickOShay · 27/12/2019 08:18

Benedict

Rafael

Rupert

Diggory

Quentin

Conrad

Roland

Ruben

Vincent

I like Guy - I think it a good solid name - but were I have ever to had a second son I would call him John - just love it. My grandfather was John Johnson known as Johnny ( not the famous air pilot ) but I do think John is a great name

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/12/2019 20:35

"Try hard" in the sense that quite a few are the sort chosen by people trying to sound a bit posh.

I know lots of ambitious middle class people who have given their children these names.

The really posh types I know are actually just called things like Charlie & Tom

Frazzledbyalot · 27/12/2019 20:48

I like jasper and victor.
Other names to consider: Harold. Arthur. Arnold. Aurelius. Cornelius. Augustus. Hansel. Cassius. Vincent. Reginald. Franklin.

LarkDescending · 27/12/2019 22:05

I like Guy, which seems very underused these days.

Other thoughts: Alastair, Angus, Magnus?

Grufallosfriends · 28/12/2019 08:30

"Try hard" in the sense that quite a few are the sort chosen by people trying to sound a bit posh.

Could it be that these people simply like the name? That they're not 'trying' to sound like anything?!
