How is it spelt? Is it Euan?

Yup it’s Euan

smemorata · 16/12/2019 18:33

Eogan?

smemorata · 16/12/2019 18:34

My friend's son is Eoin but I think that's a different name.

ny20005 · 16/12/2019 18:36

Eoghan / Eoin is the same name but neither are a variation of Ewan

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 16/12/2019 18:37

Isn’t Eoghan & Eion pronounced Owen?

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 16/12/2019 18:38

Eoin*

VanyaHargreeves · 16/12/2019 18:44

Eoghan

Euan is Scottish technically but it’s a Gaelic name so I imagine it would be the Irish spelling too? A very quick google suggests there’s no official Irish spelling as it’s a Gaelic name really?

According to this pretty well-researched site (and I've read similar elsewhere):

Scottish Ewan = Irish Eoghan, a very old Gaelic name meaning "from the yew (tree)".

Unrelated to:

Scottish Iain and Eoin = Irish Eoin. Both derive from the Latin Iohannes, as does the English John. (As does the Irish Seán, though that came via French Jehan).

It's fairly well known in Ireland that Eoin and Eoghan are unrelated names that happen to sound similar. Are Ewan and Eoin/Iain considered unrelated names in Scotland?

mathanxiety · 16/12/2019 19:15

Eoghan.

This name is sometimes used as an Irish version of Eugene but it's not related.

MarDhea · 16/12/2019 19:16

Oh - and Euan isn't an Irish name. It's very uncommon in Ireland and only really seen when there's a Scottish family link.

FairytaleofBykerGrove · 16/12/2019 19:18

All the Eoghans ans Eoins that I know are pronounced Owen. Ewan or Euan are your options.

Ok thank you I was just wondering. I have Irish roots through my grandma so was trying to find something irish I liked ( as well as hubby)
