Carolena/Karolena/Carolina??????

I absolutely love the name Karolena/Carolena and have for quite some time.
My man is giving in a bit but doesn't want our daughter to be nicknamed Carol. I keep trying to say that Carol sounds like a forced nickname from the name and that Lena would be the nickname I prefer. I'm also hard of hearing and we use ASL to communicate and spelling out Lena is easy to sign.

I think he's given in a bit on using the name but now we're fighting over spelling.
Traditional way I knew it spelt was Carolena (which has more Italian in the name - hubs is Italian I'm not last name isn't Italian either) and recently I looked into spelling the name Karolena which seems to be more popular in Eastern Europe (We're both German and Polish with a obviously polish last name)

He doesn't seem to like either of these spellings and would like to go with Carolina but pronounce it with the Lena sound at the end. We live in the United States and Carolina is the name of a state so I feel that using that spelling everyone will read it like the state.

What would you nickname Carolena/Karolena/Carolina and what spelling looks the best and least forced.

i would go with Carolena if you are set on using Lena as a nickname

Is Carolena pronounced Caro-lane-a?

Karolena immediately reminds me of kerosene. Sounds like a chemical or fuel.

If pronounced Carolina I’d spell it that way.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 08/12/2019 19:13

I thank you are definitely correct that in the USA, Carolina is always going to be pronounced Carol-line-ah.
I assume you would want the full name pronounced Carol-lane-ah.
I think, on that basis, Karolena, is probably most likely to be said correctly more often and would go better with a Polish surname.

I love Caroline

hannahfaith · 08/12/2019 19:21

We want it to be pronounced Caro-lee-nuh
My MIL's name ends in Lena so that's why we're set on using that as a nickname and the name Caroline is my inspiration for it as my grandmothers middle name is Caroline.

Caroline every time.

doritosdip · 08/12/2019 19:28

People from the UK will assume it's pronounced like the state so "lena" at the end makes more sense.

Spied · 08/12/2019 19:29

Karolena given your heritage.
Definitely nn Lena.

Difficultcustomer · 08/12/2019 19:35

I think it’s difficult. I would definitely pronounce Carolina like the state first time and need to remember a different version.

However spell check and individuals may correct the other spellings to Carolina or Karolina so I think she will be spelling it anyway. I like Lena or Carol as nn.

DramaAlpaca · 09/12/2019 00:43

In the US, to get the pronunciation you want, Karolena.

Ellmau · 09/12/2019 00:48

I've never seen it spelt with an E.

Carolina would be the Italian spelling, pronounced the way you want. Karolina is the usual German and Polish spelling afaik.

MrsNoMopp · 09/12/2019 08:09

Carolina. You could also have Carrie as nickname.

I was going to say Carolena to get the pronunciation you prefer, but you'd probably get some people saying Carol-AY-na.

DoTheNextRightThing · 09/12/2019 08:17

I know a Karolina, who anglicised her name to Caroline when she moved to the UK. It's pronounced "Karo-leena" so if that's not the name you're going for, I wouldn't spell it that way.

DoTheNextRightThing · 09/12/2019 08:18

Oh, just saw you do want it pronounced Karo-leena. Never mind then!

FWIW I would pronounced Lena as "Lay-na" but maybe that's just me.

DuchessMinnie · 09/12/2019 08:36

I'm a Caroline and I have never seen Karolena before but I love it! I hated my name growing up but have warmed slightly to it as an adult. Prefer Carolina but with your spelling to get the pronunciation right.

StCharlotte · 09/12/2019 08:42

There was an athlete called Karolina Kluft and I always thought it looks lovely written down (not so sure about Kluft!). I would pronounce it Karoleena.

Katfood · 09/12/2019 12:08

Most folk will know “Lena” is said “lee-na”

Not at all! Lena is more like Layna.

Katfood · 09/12/2019 12:10

The pronunciation you want 'Ka ro lee na' is the standard German pronunciation of Karolina.

Unfortunately it doesn't work in English.

VenusClapTrap · 10/12/2019 23:11

Karolena. Lovely.
