What do you think of the name Wilfred? Nn Wilf, or Freddie.

Is it just too old fashioned?
We be a brother to Charles.

Fashionable but awful. It will date quickly, and badly.

I know a teenage Wilf (full name Wilfred) and it’s a fab name. Go for it

My 2 year old DS is a Wilfred. I absolutely love it for all the reasons stated above (namely, very versatile, lots of options, Wilfred Owen etc). And I don't think it's remotely wet or wimpy (in fact, my boy is so strong-willed, we realise his name is very apt, willful Wilf).

We use Wilf/Wilfie as a shortening. When he says his own name he says 'Whiffey' which is beyond cute.

It's definitely very marmite, though (as demonstrated in this thread) - when I tell people his name I either get 'wow, I absolutely love that' or a slightly awkward silence while someone tries to arrange their face in a way that doesn't say 'yuck, that's gross' Grin. It's so funny. And it doesn't put me off in the slightest.

I like Wilfred/wilf. Not keen on Freddie.

Wilfie!

Majorcollywobble · 18/11/2019 22:19

@HorridHamble
I thought Pip Squeak and Wilfred were cartoon characters ?

HorridHamble · 19/11/2019 01:59

@Majorcollywobble Yes, it was a wartime comic strip apparently. The game we played as school kids and Brownies in the mid-80s was basically ‘Duck, duck, goose’ but we said Pip, Squeak and Wilfred instead. I am now questioning why!

I still love Wilf.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 19/11/2019 04:47

Love it!!

@HorridHamble
Your version nicer
Wilf is a good name

Practicalmagico · 19/11/2019 08:53

I like it. I love Wilf

MrsCantthinkofaname · 19/11/2019 14:00

I love Wilfred. Was top of our list if DD had a been a boy. And think Wilf is much less common than Freddie as a nn. Great name!

Huncamuncaa · 19/11/2019 21:34

Love it!

But from my experience dont call a child a name if you intend to call them something else, especially if it's more commonly a nickname from another name.

My ds changed his name back to his traditional name and refused to answer to his cute nickname. We have no idea why - he was only 4! Luckily, I always liked the traditional form but we definitely over complicated it for him.
