Elaine?

Love the meaning, look of this name, straight out the pages of Aurthurian legend!
Great nickname options...El, Lain, Lainey.
Possible sister to Louise...Think Louise and Elaine, plus nicknames Lou and Lainey, sound pretty good together IMO!

Thoughts?

Too 60s for me. Perhaps in another ten years time.
As others have said it's Maureen and Sandra territory

mbb1 · 10/11/2019 17:09

In what way is Elaine "more out there"? It's ordinary and boring. Was at school/college with any number of Elaines and not one of them had any of those nicknames.

FizzyGreenWater · 10/11/2019 17:26

The problem is that it is not a classic name. Louise is.

The comparison with Beverley, Sandra, Valerie is good. They're names which have a moment and then are really gone, and there are reasons for that. Elaine is objectively just not very nice. It's whiney and peters out at the end. It's not at all interesting, it has no gravitas, no history to it. It couldn't be more different to Louise, even though yes Louise has been in and out of fashion. It also very much does not have good nicknames - Lainey? Really?!

There are lots of names which would fit with Louise much better.

Timetobegood · 10/11/2019 17:29

Louise is still a lovely name and hasn’t dated like Elaine.

subwaysaladfan · 10/11/2019 17:39

Not keen on Elaine but like Elainna

Paintedmaypole · 10/11/2019 17:58

It is one of those names that has a beautiful sound and the links to Arthurian legend etc but was popular in the 1950s and early 60s . People will know ordinary 60 year old women with the name. It won't be romanticised again for at least 20 years.

Sparklysunflowers · 10/11/2019 17:59

Elaine sounds beautiful imo. My ch nicer sounding than say Margot, Greta, Phoebe etc. Of course that's very subjective but personally I find the sound of Elaine very pretty. I even prefer it over Eleanor.

MyOtherProfile · 10/11/2019 18:04

I actually thought this was a joke thread. Elaine is too frumpy to me. Just like Sharon and Karen. Nothing wrong really but just old and frumpy.

Infamy · 10/11/2019 18:09

Grin granny chic! But someone has to be first. Parents 20 years ago would have said the same about Arthur and Elsie. It’ll come back, you could be a trendsetter!

jfoyo26 · 10/11/2019 18:30

@FizzyGreenWater despite the boomer connection which puts people off and I get. Elaine has a ton of history it's effectively the scottish version of Helen and I'm sure you'd say that was a classic in the similar vein to Louise!

Elaine to me is like Brenda, Diane, Michelle, Janet, Carole, Tina, Christine, Pauline.

misspiggy19 · 10/11/2019 19:44

Old lady name

Laney79 · 10/11/2019 20:07

I am an Elaine (I'm 40) -my nicknames are generally Laine, Laney, or Lou (laney-Lou)

For me it's been a great name, not many people with the same name as me (lots of Kelly's, Rebecca's etc at my school/class).

But then I am technically middle aged!!

AllTheGlitter · 10/11/2019 20:11

Far too old fashioned IMO. Also reminds me of Elaine from Tracy beaker.

hungryhippie · 10/11/2019 20:17

It's a harsh sounding name to my ears. I prefer Helen.

sue51 · 10/11/2019 20:20

Its a lovely name that's gone out of fashion and is probably due a revival.

bubs80 · 10/11/2019 20:47

No just no

neverornow · 10/11/2019 20:59

Saying out loud now - it's actually a really pretty name. And would go lovely with Louise. I like the nicknames you mention also.

SallyWD · 10/11/2019 21:03

I like it. It sounds very fresh in a sea of Islas and Avas.

Krazynights34 · 10/11/2019 21:04

I have sisters called Elaine and Louise so I love them

Sparklysunflowers · 10/11/2019 21:04

Who cares about fashion? Objectively it's a lovely name and is much more memorable and interesting among all the little Evies, Ellies and Poppies!

raeray · 10/11/2019 21:37

I think it's really pretty and goes well with Louise.
I say go for it OP!

ilovetofu · 10/11/2019 21:40

Love.

LemonPrism · 10/11/2019 21:45

Elaine the pain

Marmighty · 10/11/2019 22:07

I know sisters Elaine and Louise (late 30s early 40s) and they are awesome so I love it, due a revival. It's time to move on from mauds and elsies to the generation of the 70s. Vanessa is another great name.
