How popular is Martha?

Candlecandle · 31/10/2019 15:59

Just wondering how common it is currently and general opinions of it as a name please.
Also what, if anything have you heard it shortened to?
If we like Martha what other names might we like? TIA

I don't think it's particularly common and it's lovely. I don't know any shortened forms of it.

honeybunlatte · 31/10/2019 16:29

I like Martha. It's ranked number 94 on this years ONS report. 560 Marthas born in 2018.
I've never heard it shortened to anything.

daisypond · 31/10/2019 16:34

I know a couple in their late teens but no younger ones. For similar names I’d look at a Biblical/Puritan vibe.
Rebecca
Esther
Leah
Hannah
Rachel
Dinah

Quite a lot around here , have seen it shortened to Mattie

Why would anyone shorten such a short and easy to say name Confused? Ma? Marth? GrinWink

I like Martha but it feels like it's becoming more fashionable so may continue to rise up the charts.

spice3 · 31/10/2019 17:04

I like it!

maloofhoof · 31/10/2019 17:07

Peachbubble · 31/10/2019 17:46

Criceta · 31/10/2019 17:50

I love it. Wanted to call DD Martha but DH vetoed it 😢

Africa2go · 31/10/2019 17:51

It was really popular when i had my first so 15 years ago, i loved it but didnt use it because 2 of my antenatal class were already planning to use it. I dont think it stayed popular, think there are only a handful at school.

I now work with a Martha, she's early 20s and she's known as Maz.

Raera · 31/10/2019 17:52

I know one, in her 20's and yes, she's very popular!

Smellybluecheese · 31/10/2019 17:59

I know 4. They are 13, 7, 4 and 6 months. It’s one of my favourites but BIL used it.

MissHenty · 31/10/2019 18:18
