Rockingdown · 25/10/2019 08:11

We are pretty much set for if our baby due in March is a boy I think, but for a girl we have been much less sure! Have a shortlist now and wondered what people’s thoughts were, and also if any other names we’ve not thought of fit with our list? Thanks so much for all thoughts!

Rebecca
Robyn
Cara
Carrie
Morgan
Mirren
Isla
Erin
Emma
Harper
Kirsten

Cara and Erin. I love both. My DD is Orla so it was a toss up between that and Erin for me

CravingCheese · 25/10/2019 08:32

Rebecca: nice but maybe a little boring.
Robyn: I really like it.
Cara: cute.
Carrie: I don't like it tbh.
Morgan: lovely!
Mirren: it sounds like a surname imo.
Isla: not my cup of tea.
Erin: nice.
Emma: nice.
Harper: no!
Kirsten: it's nice.

hellotabitha · 25/10/2019 08:41

I like Carrie, Robyn and Erin

MrsNoMopp · 25/10/2019 08:48

Rebecca and Emma are lovely names, classics and currently underused. Cara is great too. Robyn, Carrie and Kirsten are quite nice (or how about Cassie?) Mirren, Morgan and Harper are too surnamey (Merryn would be nice though). Not keen on Isla and Erin, they're a bit insubstantial.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 09:03

Rebecca - was very popular in the 1990s, will be Becky or Becks
Robyn - ok
Cara - fine
Carrie - nice
Morgan - too masculine
Mirren - no
Isla - too popular
Erin - very popular
Emma - love it
Harper - no
Kirsten - not keen but it's ok

MissHenty · 25/10/2019 09:59

Carrie or Robyn scream C word to me (I know I know- I’m an awful person and I wish that my brain didn’t think these thoughts but want to be honest)

I love Isla or Emma or Harper. Emma is such a classic and so underused

What’s your current favourite from your list @Rockingdown

What’s your boy name if you don’t mind me asking

FindaPenny · 25/10/2019 10:05

Rebecca- nice maybe due for a comeback? Also like Rachel
Robyn-really nice
Cara- love
Carrie-don't like
Morgan-really don't like
Mirren-maybe merrin would be nicer
Isla-ok
Erin-nice
Emma-don't like
Harper-really don't like
Kristen-don't like

bn02 · 25/10/2019 10:12

Rebecca - really don't like, outdated. Becca/Beca on its own is better in my opinion

Robyn - like

Cara - it's okay, bit plain

Carrie - cute

Morgan - not keen, sounds very masculine

Mirren - don't like

Isla - overused and too popular now

Erin - it's okay

Emma - overused

Harper - really like

Kirsten - sounds too outdated

I'd go for Harper or Carrie!

georgia19ox · 25/10/2019 10:12

I think the names you have picked are very nice, i personally would care if other people didn't like the names you have picked.
My personal favorite from your list are Harper Erin and Robyn i think they are beautiful names for little girls

CampfireZen · 25/10/2019 13:16

Erin my favourite from your list.

Mirren also lovely.

The only one I've ever met (20ish) told me she really liked its Gaelic or Celtic origins connected with the sea.

Anything with sea/ocean connotations is always good, strong, nature imagery, IMO.
(Plus Helen Mirren's a feisty namesake!)
Maeryn/Merryn also really nice, for that reason.

Cara's another great choice: very popular for the under 5s round here, mind you, if you care about that sort of thing.

PreschoolYes · 25/10/2019 13:22

Cara, Erin or Emma

Shadow1234 · 25/10/2019 15:04

Love the name Erin! This would be my first choice
Robyn would be my second favourite
Cara is nice
Morgan - Has a harsh sound for me
Also prefer Merrin/Merryn to Mirren
Not keen on others

Firsttimemummy27 · 25/10/2019 16:58

Harper is sweet for a girl

Loveislandaddict · 25/10/2019 17:08

Rebecca - Classic, due for a revival
Robyn - like this
Cara - like this
Carrie - okay
Morgan - don’t particularly like
Mirren - never heard of before
Isla - nice
Erin - okay
Emma - niceharper - Beckham connection
Kirsten - like this

Overall a good list.

Alternatives:
Meredith
Freya
Tara
Zoe
Faye
Rowena
Elouise
Louisa
Christina
Tamsin
Dorothea

Firsttimemummy27 · 25/10/2019 17:10

We chose Effie for a girl and we also had lottie

MissHenty · 25/10/2019 17:27

I don’t see how cara can be described as “very popular” is number 295 🤣 practically outside the top 300 names! It’s pretty rare and is declining in popularity year on year. So if there’s a deluge of Cara’s around you under 5 then that’s a total coincidence and statistically very very unlikely given the rarity of the name.

For what it’s worth, I’ve never met one

milliefiori · 25/10/2019 17:31

I love Robyn and Emma, but Emma is a bit ordinary alone, so how about Robyn Emma? That's beautiful.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 25/10/2019 17:32

Like Rebecca, Erin, Carrie and Kirsten

CampfireZen · 25/10/2019 19:57

MissHenty,

Just giving a snapshot of my locality, that's all.
Maybe extrapolating its use wider is not the case, then?

I know a 4 yr old and a 2 yr old Cara personally.

And am including a few pregnant mums' discussions on likely baby names (different groups/different settings), and Cara seems a popular choice.
Who knows: maybe the Cara Delevingne effect?

So statistically unrecorded as yet, admittedly!

finallychangedmyusername · 26/10/2019 13:09

Oh, a little Rebecca would be so refreshing and lovely to hear (amongst the endless Islas, Avas, Evies, Ellas). Definite thumbs up for Rebecca.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 26/10/2019 17:01

Rebecca - nothing wrong with it but not to my taste, bit plain and old fashioned
Robyn - very pretty
Cara - quite nice
Carrie - like
Morgan - dislike
Mirren - actually quite like
Isla - pretty but I think overdone and peaked a few years ago
Erin - love, one of my favourites
Emma - not keen for the same reasons as rebecca
Harper - okay
Kirsten - no

missmouse101 · 26/10/2019 17:05

Cara.

KirstyT11 · 26/10/2019 17:48

Love cara.... it was between that and Eliza for me if baby came out a girl.
It was a girl and we went with Eliza when she was born ... but still love Cara.

Felicity
Elodie
Callie
I liked olive but hubby vetoed it early on
We also loved Amara but just didnt think it would suit.

Good luck choosing and it doesnt matter what anyone else likes as long as you sr both happy with it.

Mamabear88 · 26/10/2019 18:47

Rebecca is my name so obviously biased there :) I love Isla, the hubby and I were considering for our daughter but decided against due to its recent popularity. Cara was his first choice but I didn't feel like it was her name although I do really like it. Erin is lovely too, and Carrie. Not keen on the others x

Rockingdown · 27/10/2019 06:23

Thank you all so much really appreciate all the responses! Think we are favouring Cara, Robyn and Rebecca at the moment. I also really love Erin, always have, but my DH isn’t as keen!
