We can't agree on a name at all. I like names that can't be shortened.
I like
Isla
Rosie
Daisy
Husband likes VERY old fashioned names 🤦🏻‍♀️

What are some of the names DH likes? That would make it easier to suggest some that you both might like.

RuthW · 24/10/2019 17:49

But all the names you like can be shortened.

But two of your names are already short forms of other names.

Edith

Suggestions:
Fay/Faye
Merle
Doris
Joy
Dawn
Cora
Faith
Fleur
Mae

I have a dc with a one syllable name. His nickname is a lengthened version of his name. You can’t prevent nn occurring. Someone will come up with something if they want to.

Ie. Tim becomes Timmy

DialANumber · 24/10/2019 20:27

It's hard to find any names that truly have no shortening! I couldn't shorten all your choices! I love Rosie but not so keen on tbe others.

What does your husband like?

mamamomoa · 24/10/2019 20:43

you might like names that can't be shortened but nicknames are social signifiers and important in terms of creating bonds and belonging in social settings - friends using nicknames to demonstrate closeness to non friends or family using nicknames as a symbol of love! So even if you pick a name hard to shorten, it will still be or some other avenue used to create a nickname if your child has friends! It's human nature to create bonds and demonstrate those by having 'in' and 'out' codes like nicknames. If they struggle shortening it, you just get crap nicknames or people use surnames or hobbies. I know someone called Rosie who we call RoRo and someone called Pearl who is called Sherry by her mum for some reason!

mamamomoa · 24/10/2019 21:07

Don't even know if my post made sense but basically you don't choose if your child gets a nickname or their name shortened down the road - all you can do is give them a name with good nickname potentials so they don't get a shit one Grin

mummaB89 · 25/10/2019 01:32

My husband has suggested Mary and Maureen 🤦🏻‍♀️ I already have a Harry and a Grace. I like traditional names but nothing that sounds like an 80 year old lady

@mamamomoa haha I got what you meant. I understand I can't control nicknames and I wouldn't want to but names that people automatically shorten I would like to avoid, my niece is Poppy and everyone has always called her pops. When she went to nursery she wouldn't answer to poppy because she didn't know they was talking to her 😆
