A Greek Mythology crazed pal of mine is stuck between the two. I'd love to see which one you prefer, because I adore both.

I like Ariadne! I’m not sure about Hestia.

MrsBertBibby · 16/10/2019 05:00

Ariadne's story is a bit rubbish and her family was a horror show. Hestia for me of the two.

Ariadne (it's nothing to do with spiders, that was Arachne)

funkt · 16/10/2019 08:20

Oops, I put down Ariadne down for the spider person. Sorry, sorry, ignore me!

Both ghastly names! Plenty of beautiful names from Greek mythology 😩

MissCharleyP · 16/10/2019 17:08

Ariadne reminds me of ‘Knightmare’ the 1989s kids show. Giant spider that trapped the dungeoneer in her web if they weren’t quick enough/didn’t know the spell. Described as the ‘queen of arachnids’ and the great grandmother of Arachne.

MissCharleyP · 16/10/2019 17:08

*1980s

Also Poirots assistant I think. Ariadne Oliver?

diddlediddle · 16/10/2019 17:27

Knightmare was a quality show. They don't make em like that any more...

Ariadne's story is a bit rubbish and her family was a horror show.

Yes... the Minotaur (which she assisted Theseus to slay) was her half brother. A bit of a dysfunctional family. They had a lovely house though. (I've just been to Crete Grin)

Being abandoned on Naxos must have been a downer but being married to Dionysus might have been more fun.

I quite like both names.

The suggestion upthread of Arrietty seems a bit random - surely no one names their DD after a Borrower, and not exactly in the same league as Greek mythological names.Confused

batvixen123 · 16/10/2019 18:11

Your friend has nicked my list for my DD! I won't tell you which one I picked but I will say those were both in the final five.

DH and I decided that both would end up being inevitably shortened and chose based on whether we preferred "Ari" or "Hessy".

funkt · 17/10/2019 16:01

@batvixen123 ah, both pretty names of course. This thread is chaos but hopefully she chooses the nicest one. Both names are really nice in my opinion, but lots of people clearly hate them haha

Hestia, totally - home and hearth, and close to Hester which is another good strong name.
