Harriet and Ariadne?

NC for this just as outing. I've been mulling over names, and not sure about this combination! I already have a DD Harriet, always called Hattie although of course she might choose to be Harriet or Harry later on. One of the few names I love this time round is Ariadne. I think chances are though that this would be shortened to Ari or Addy. I like both of them as nicknames but are they too similar sounding to Harriet/Hattie? (Especially when being bellowed up the stairs, for example?)

And if general consensus is a no, can anyone suggest any other lovely -e type names or names in the same vein? I love the sound of Antigone (and the nickname Tiggy!) but hate how it looks. Not a fan of Hermione.

Thanks!

I love Ariadne. I think that Harriet and Ariadne might be a bit tongue-twisty, but if you love the name then I wouldn't see it as a reason not to use it.

Antigone is beautiful and on our own list - if we use it, we'll use Ana/Anna for a nickname rather than Tiggy. Hermione is also on our list.

Would you consider Phoebe, Daphne, Evadne? Athene?

Our girls ended up being Embla, Olympia and Vita.

Oh the nicknames wouldn’t be too similar at all, I think it would be a lovely combo.
Ariadne is on my girl name list as well, but I’d use nicknames of Ads, or Danni.

MissHenty · 09/10/2019 12:39

I don’t think the nicknames would be too similar -I’d go for it

Other _e names:

Edith (Eddie)
Margaret (Maggie)
Clementine (Clemmie)
Ottilie (Ottie)
Emmy/Emmie

No they sound too alike but have a completely different vibe. I think Harriet will probably feel short changed having a sister called Ariadne. One name being unusual the other being very popular.

Thank you! I'm glad people don't think they sound too same-y. I don't mind it having totally different vibes to siblings - this will
actually be dc4 and all their names are different styles. I don't really follow a theme so we just picked names we liked each time and our tastes are obviously changeable! They all suit them and Hattie loves her name, she's the only one we know.

In response to suggestions, I'm warming to Antigone a bit although would definitely be a Tiggy I think, at least while I get to choose! Not keen on Phoebe (too Friends) or Daphne. I haven't heard Evadne before... it's nice but I might have to roll it around my head a few times! Clementine and Ottilie are both names I love but DH doesn't sadly.

They're both lovely names, but guarantee I'd end up saying Arriet and Hariadne Grin

They're just that wee bit too similar.

bendythumbs · 09/10/2019 13:34

Thank you for the suggestions btw @Awwlookatmybabyspider - not hitting quite the right note although can't quite put my finger on why not as some lovely names!

Just to clarify, she is never ever called Harriet except at the doctor's and most people don't know it's her full name. TBH I'm more worried about Addy and Hattie sounding too similar!

Harry and Ari sound VERY similar, as do Hatty and Addy. I would try to think of something else, tbh.

Hermione
Persephone
Penelope
Arianna
Adriana
Hebe
Phoebe

Xanthe?

milienhaus · 09/10/2019 15:17

Phaedra? Ariadnes sister in the myth!

071019DD · 11/10/2019 03:53

I love Ariadne and I dont think any of the potential nn confusion would put me off. I love Addy (Adelaide was on my list for Addy nn but OH vetoed) and think it sounds fab with Hattie... as for shouting up the stairs, in our house I'd probably should "Ads" if there ever was any confusion but kids are pretty switched on (or deliberately switched off) to shouts up the stairs lol!!!

FredaFrogspawn · 11/10/2019 03:59

Love Ariadne, but I agree it’s very sound-similar to Hattie. Love, love Vita! What a great name. And I have always loved Phaedra.

MrsBertBibby · 11/10/2019 05:28

Do you know the stories of these mythical characters? Maybe look them up before saddling your baby with them.

Harriet and Penelope sound great together, and Penelope (wife of Odysseus) is a rare instance of a Greek mythical woman who is smart and has agency rather than being a perennial victim or rescuee of some bloke.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 11/10/2019 05:32

Ariadne gets a big fat no from me. Sorry.

BlueWonder · 11/10/2019 06:03

Lydia shortened to Lyddie?

BlueWonder · 11/10/2019 06:12

To my mind, the 'd' in Ariadne makes it a bit too much. Sorry, don't know why! I might condider just Ariane or Arianne, shortened to Ana or Anna.

Ophelia, shortened to Lia?

littleorangecat22 · 11/10/2019 06:24

I love both

Aridane · 11/10/2019 06:37

I too live Ariadne Grin

Aridane · 11/10/2019 08:53

Love Aridane!

Sleepnplay · 11/10/2019 09:08

I love Ariadne too, think it sounds fine with Harriet/Hattie.

Seraphina shortened to Sepphie?

userabcname · 11/10/2019 09:13

I love the name Ariadne. Only know one and she shortens to Ari. Also know an Andromeda which is also pretty cool!

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 11/10/2019 17:13

Bit off topic but how do you pronounce antigone, I look at it as its spelt and it doesn't sound like a name?!
Anyway I love the name Harriet, how about philippa?
Hattie and pippa sound cute

Aridane · 11/10/2019 18:38
