Inspired by another thread. What kind of person do you think of when you hear 'Owen'?

We don't know what we're having at the moment but Owen is a strong contender for a boys name Smile

Spied · 01/10/2019 09:01

Or is it the kind of parents who choose 'Owen' who make him who he is?
A lot of the posts see an 'Owen' in quite similar ways.
KittenMittens1 Love it too

Funny, manly, handsome, it's a lovely name!

Alarae · 01/10/2019 09:11

Owen Hunt from Grey's Anatomy.

So.. Ginger and Scottish? He was Scottish in Made of Honour film with Patrick Dempsey.

WildCherryBlossom · 01/10/2019 09:23

Welsh, broad shouldered, honest, rugby player.

Morado · 01/10/2019 09:48

I think we are shaped quite a lot by our name
I used to think that about 25 years ago it through my work I came into names that have been perceived as posh or not so posh used by different groups of people in different roles. Names seem more blended across the board these days.
For example when I was younger the name Tyrone or Wayne wasnt seen a great choice if you wanted to get on in life in my area. However I have worked with senior managers with this name and they are nice intelligent people.i used to work at a youth club about 15 years ago and a kid called Chardonnay used to come in. She was academically very clever and has a successful buisness in our town.
I know longer judge ( too much!!) I do draw the line at random letters with no name attached to them . I was introduced to a child called C.J. I though his name must have ben something like Charles John but no, C.J. is his whole name!

MissHenty · 01/10/2019 15:49

@notacooldad “Owen would be whoever you shaped him to be” ... hmmm not sure it works like that. They have their own little characters, as much as we try and mould them, it doesn’t work! 🤣

I really like Owen Jones so I’m biased

I think the name Owen would get continually confused with the increasingly popular “Rowan” which is storming up the charts at the moment and looks set to enter top 50 and top 20 on current trajectory.

Owen is more unusual than Rowan and is outside the top 100 so people are much more likely to assume they heard Rowan rather than Owen in future years. Could get annoying

Pieceofpurplesky · 01/10/2019 15:58

MissHenty I would say they opposite - I know a lot more Owens than Rowans (I am a teacher in a high school). There are loads of Owens (at least two per year) and only one Rowan (girl)

FurrySlipperBoots · 01/10/2019 16:06

I dunno but he's definitely Welsh! Not just of vaguely Welsh heritage either, he's got to have a heavy accent, with Welsh being his first language.

Yeah I agree but dare I say many children are a product if their background to some degree. My point was you cant say who Owen is, because he could be anyone!

MissHenty · 01/10/2019 20:08

@Pieceofpurplesky yes that makes sense as a few years ago Owen was more popular than Rowan. Infact Owen has always been more popular than Rowan until about 2 years ago.
Rowan is now storming up the charts, it’s in the top 100 (Owen is not) and on current trajectory will be top 50 or top 30 soon. It climbed 15 or so places this year whereas Owen fell a few places.

Owen on the other hand is declining in popularity.

The ONS statistics speak for themselves. See graphs below based on Government ONS data for Uk baby names:

names.darkgreener.com/#rowan

MissHenty · 01/10/2019 20:09

(can you tell I’m a baby name stats geek!!)

What you say sounds completely in line with the data though @Pieceofpurplesky as the children you teach in school won’t have been born in the past 4 years. A lot can change in that time ! Look at Arlo! Came from nowhere!

RueCambon · 01/10/2019 20:12

45, Irish or Welsh,, likes rugby but nice guy

Icantthinkofanewname87 · 02/10/2019 05:56

Pale - pale skin, pale hair, pale eyes. Just generally pale. Unhealthy looking and a bit socially awkward. Quite funny though.

KatherineJaneway · 02/10/2019 05:59

Welsh.

Sexnotgender · 02/10/2019 06:00

He's that twat from the Guardian

This. He’s ruined the name for me. Which is a shame as I quite like it.

spiderlight · 02/10/2019 13:33

Owen is a nice kid. Quiet, but a good mate with a great sense of humour once you get to know him. Dark, sturdy, surprisingly sporty. I know two and they are both like this.

FelicityFlutterby · 02/10/2019 14:04

I'm deliberately not teading the thread before I write this, as I don't want to subconsciously take on other posters' ideas. Am I taking this a bit too seriously Grin?

I think Owen as a child likes soft play and lkaying football. He is pretty good at maths at school.

When he's older he is sporty and well groomed. He studies something business-y or engineering at university or maybe becomes a mechanic.

As a middle aged - older man, he's quite good looking and is a regular at fancy pubs, but not a big drinker. He just has a pint on his own and reads the paper or has a chat with other regulars or sometimes has lunch there with his partner.

I have no idea where all that came from^^! I obviously have a particularly strong association with the name Owen for some reason!

Annoying

Ohyesiam · 02/10/2019 14:08

A big pale Welsh man. Slow movements, gentle, but not great with relationships or intimacy.

It’s only my imagination though.
