Penelope or Felicity

We've gone around and around and these are two we can agree on - names I love which he has already vetoed are Leonora, Eliza and Cordelia (can you tell my preference was names ending in a?!)

So, our last name is Thatcher, we like Penelope and Felicity. Middle name slightly tricky as we both like Evelyn/Evangeline but that gives the initial "PET" and we both like Grace but again my husband thinks she will get called PG Tips 🙄

If we picked Penelope the intention would be Nel/Nella as a NN, I don't like Fliss or Flick as a NN for Felicity which is my main reservation on that name.

Thoughts, suggestions of names I might not have thought of and criticisms all welcome 😊

Felicity. Try to discourage Fliss, Flick.

Penelope, less of them. But Felicity is a pretty name. Penny is cute as a short version as well.

Wizzbangpop · 28/09/2019 21:43

Felicity

I was going to be a felicity and the other name my parents had on their list but didn’t choose was Imogen and Freya

Cornberry · 28/09/2019 21:44

Felicity without question! I love this name.

upups · 28/09/2019 21:44

Love both! Penny or P and fizzy are super cute nicknames for both! (Not much help I know hahaha) We did have Penelope on our baby names list if I had had a girl so I think I prefer that name a little more

Wingingthis · 28/09/2019 21:45

Penelope 🧡

aibutohavethisusername · 28/09/2019 21:45

Felicity

Penelope

CheesePleaseLoueese · 28/09/2019 21:47

Penelope

Shockers · 28/09/2019 21:48

You’re overthinking the initials thing!

Bobismyfriend · 28/09/2019 21:50

Penelope because I like Nel.

MrsRufusdog789 · 28/09/2019 21:57

Miranda ?

DancingDella · 28/09/2019 21:57

I agree you are overthinking the initials thing. Pet isn't going to be a problem. And I highly doubt PGT will be picked up on as PGTips. I think you are seeing issues that aren't there. Choose Penelope if you like it best and the middle name you like too.

Frillyfarmer · 28/09/2019 22:02

Thank you. I'm glad you think I'm over thinking the initials thing - put that one to bed! @MrsRufusdog789 I LOVE Miranda (and Matilda) but we have a DS whose name begins with an M and didn't want DD with same initial!

@passmethecrisps

I just had to tag you here Grin

Mamasaurus82 · 28/09/2019 22:06

Felicity Kendall vs Penelope Keith. Felicity wins

AverageMummy · 28/09/2019 22:08

Penelope is pretty & quirky
Felicity is beautiful and classy

Both lovely but different options.... I think I’d vote Felicity but both are great

MonnaLisa · 28/09/2019 22:11

Penelope. Oh and my son is called Ulysses in case you wanted to arrange a marriage Wink

CocoLoco87 · 28/09/2019 22:17

I adore Felicity!

MondeoFan · 28/09/2019 22:28

Felicity Thatcher is a mouthful! (Say it out loud several times)
Because of the surname I'd go with Penelope.

Passmethecrisps · 28/09/2019 22:30

For a start, OP I have to say you have extraordinary taste in names!!

My Penelope got Lady Penelope for a while which didn’t bother me as it sort of suited her. She is now the usual nickname.

My younger is the other of your choices. She goes by one of the nicknames you have been advised to avoid!

I am never short of compliments on their names frankly. Felicity is maybe the harder sell with my accent and it is less cute than Penelope.

They are both amazing names frankly

Passmethecrisps · 28/09/2019 22:45

I have properly read your op and I can probably be of actual use!

People will naturally go for penny as a nickname so you will have to be extremely explicit about that not being the name you are going for. Decide if you intend her to be Penelope with occasional Nelly or if nell/nelly will be her name. The latter would be easier I think.

My F is a Fliss for us but as a nickname it hasn’t stuck at all. Most people call her felicity and Fliss is just for us. No one ever shortens it to anything. I think it’s because it doesn’t have an obvious one. That suits me perfectly actually.

So nicknames and unintentional shortening is more of a concern with Penelope but doesn’t need to be an issue if you are prepared at the beginning.

People comment more on Felicity. I get “wow! What an amazing name” with that. We don’t live in typical felicity territory though so she will be the only one most have ever met.

Tweetingmagpie · 28/09/2019 22:47

Penelope goes better with your surname but I love them both!

FuckOffBoris · 28/09/2019 22:54

I agree with PP that Penelope easier to say with your surname.

DramaAlpaca · 28/09/2019 22:57

I agree with the recent posters that Penelope goes better with the surname.

I love both names, but the surname thing swings it for me.

As for the middle name, I'd go short, one syllable.
