Hi there. OH and I are settled on a nature led first name as we love the environment and it just feels right for us as parents. What do you think of this shortlist and do you have any suggestions? I’ve struggled to find names we agree on and almost all of these are very popular which isn’t ideal Confused

Girls:
Ivy
Lily
Rose
Violet

Boys:
Rowan
Robin
Kit
Hazel (my personal favourite for a son but OH insist it’s a ‘girls name’ Blush)

I think Hazel is a girl’s name too.

Wren?
Lily and Rose very popular now.
I have heard Oakley and Fox for boys ...

OnTheBorderline · 22/09/2019 04:22

I love Sorrel for a girl and Lark for either girl or boy :)

QuinoaWest · 22/09/2019 06:22

Saffron?
Marina?

I really like Kit and Rowan from your boys' list.

Peachbubble · 22/09/2019 07:03

I like Violet and Robin from your list. I'd agree, Hazel is a girl's name. How about
Willow
Autumn
Coral
Flora

The only boy's name I can think of is Ash.

The girls names are nice-ish but very popular as you say and quite girly. I like Fern and Wren as alternatives.

Rowan and Robin are good. For me, hazel is 100% a girl’s name.

Starrynights86 · 22/09/2019 07:17

I like Robin and Kit! Brook is nice for a boy too I think.

I think Rose is a lovely name. Clementine is a great nature name.

Potcallingkettle · 22/09/2019 07:17

Hazel is recognisably a girl for most people.
Sorrel
Heather
Hebe

Boys are much harder. What about Leo?

Marlena1 · 22/09/2019 07:22

Hazel is a girl's name. Robin is also nice for a girl. Fern and Brooke are other options. Glenn is also nice for a boy.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 22/09/2019 07:22

Elm, Wren or Fox, Bear

HMArsey · 22/09/2019 07:27

Hazel IS a girls name!

diddlediddle · 22/09/2019 07:53

Hazel is definitely a girls name. If you want to give it to a boy that's fine if course but be prepared that everyone will think he's a girl.

There are loads of more interesting nature names than the ones you've written, especially for girls. Surely a brief google of "nature baby names" will help?!

Morado · 22/09/2019 08:14

Just checked the ONS and there haven't been any boys recorded to have the name Hazel. It's definitely a girls name.. That being said, do what you like! Be potentially the first if you wish.

And whilst I love nature names, I don't like any of your names.

Atalune · 22/09/2019 08:18

Tarn for a boy? I've only ever met one, and he was lovely.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 22/09/2019 17:05

Ivy or Rowan would be my choices, although personally I love Robyn for a girl and would choose that over ivy.

I wouldn't use Hazel for a boy.

AverageMummy · 22/09/2019 17:09

All the names are lovely but Hazel has not been used for a boy since they started releasing annual records in 1996. So you could use it of course, but you’d likely be the first. Given the rising trend in giving boy names to girls, I don’t see why you shouldn’t.

I love all your names especially Ivy, Rowan & Robin.

AverageMummy · 22/09/2019 17:10

It’s funny how many say Robin is nice for a girl but don’t use Hazel for a boy, when Robin was exclusively for boys until very recently.

Panticles · 22/09/2019 17:11

I know a little boy called Moss.

IckleBear · 22/09/2019 17:36

Agree, Hazel is a girls name.
I like Moss for a boy.
Blaze?
Cove?

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 22/09/2019 19:42

Hazel most definitely a girls name, never heard it for a boy.
Fern
Robin/robyn
River
Forest
Bracken
Briar

Vera
Wren
