Is baby name too close to my own name?

Hi there,

We are having a girl and my DP really likes the name Cleo.

I like it too and it's currently top of our very short list - we have been finding the name thing quite hard work!

What I'm not sure about is if it's a bit too close to my own name Claire?

My DP likes Cleo because it also incorporates letters from his first name - sort of like a joining of our names which I think is quite sweet of him.

But I suddenly started to worry that it's too similar to my name - don't want to come across as a bit narcissistic and want her to be able to be her own person - although I have to say a lot of people have called me Sarah throughout my life as I obviously look like one more than a Claire Grin

Appreciate your thoughts!

It is a bit close sorry.

Morado · 18/09/2019 20:05

No I think it's different enough as they end in different vowel sounds and Cleo is just soooo beautiful!

Nonnymum · 18/09/2019 20:07

I think it's fine. It's obviously a different name.

onmyholibobs · 18/09/2019 20:07

They aren't too similar in my opinion. They may start with the same two letters but sound very different. Only problem would be if your DP is called Leo as that could get very confusing...😀

Littlechocola · 18/09/2019 20:07

Completely different names

NuffingChora · 18/09/2019 20:07

I don’t think it’s too similar. They’re very different ‘sorts’ of names with a different feel, even if the beginning is similar. Put it this way, I went to school with an Amanda whose mum was Mandy (presumably also an Amanda) and no one batted an eyelid.

Sunday38 · 18/09/2019 20:07

I don't think it's too close and I love the name Cleo too

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/09/2019 20:09

There are loads of families where the father and firstborn son have the same name and no-one bats an eyelid.

Cleo and Claire are different names. if you like Cleo then go for it!

Retroraver93 · 18/09/2019 20:10

Cleo is a great name OP Smile

Morgan12 · 18/09/2019 20:11

Beautiful name. I don't even think it is like claire

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/09/2019 20:12

Love Cleo! Agree with pp that the vowel at the end distinguishes it from Claire so not similar.

Another alternative is Calliope which is very different. But Cleo is fab!

bridgetreilly · 18/09/2019 20:13

I would say that's totally fine.

Emmapeeler · 18/09/2019 20:16

Completely different name OP! Go for it.

MrsL2016 · 18/09/2019 20:18

My name is very close to my DS', both begin with Dan. I didn't even give it a second thought and not a single person has commented.

Yika · 18/09/2019 20:21

Totally fine. Great name.

RavenLG · 18/09/2019 20:21

If it was Claire and Claria then maybe but this is totally different. Cleo is a lovely name

RaininSummer · 18/09/2019 20:23

It's a totally different name so I don't think it's too similar at all. Love it.

Shelby30 · 18/09/2019 20:24

I don't think it's that similar but it's a nice name go for it.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 18/09/2019 20:24

My DS has the same first initial as his dad and said that there was a problem with letters being addressed to Mr W Frickett all the time. But I guess in today's email times that's not as much of a problem?

I think the names sound quite different and I do love Cleo.

NoSauce · 18/09/2019 20:25

Depends on the accent of the OPs relatives and friends to whether it sounds the same or not. Claire and Cleo could quite easily sound similar in certain accents.

SpringFan · 18/09/2019 20:27

They are very different names.
My slight reservation is having 2 people who might open letters addressed to Ms C xxxxx when she is older. My grandparents moved in with us whe I was in my teens. shall we say that grannie assumed anything address to Ms G ZZZZZ was for her, and it was a little ackward at times?

GeoffreyAndBungle · 18/09/2019 20:27

Not too similar at all and Cleo is a lovely name.

sycamore54321 · 18/09/2019 20:27

It’s just about the right side of acceptable for me

However if you’re hoping to have further children, id be a bit hesitant about child 1 getting the super-special name that combines Mum and Dad’s name (Claire and Eoghan?) and subsequent children feeling a bit left out or less special . I dislike fathers naming sons after themselves for this same reason.

Sportsnight · 18/09/2019 20:29

Not too close, IMO, but I reserve the right to change my mind if your husband is called Leo or Theo Wink

NationMcKinley · 18/09/2019 20:29

I think they sound lovely together actually. Cleo is an awesome name
