Hiya,

Thoughts on the name Ambrose for a boy please?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Gabriel is a lot more feminine! Theodore is very feminine also but really popular now

Gabriel isn’t as feminine as Ambrose. Theodore isn’t feminine at all- I don’t know where you’re getting that from.

Ambrose literally looks like Amber and Rose mashed up.
Theodore doesn’t have anything feminine sounding in it. No ‘rose’ or ‘-a’ ending or ‘elle’ or ‘ette’. nothing feminine about it. Unlike Ambrose

@octoberlovin My partner works in I.T & his boss is a cross dresser & makes 500K+ per year & only goes by his female name at work (also wears a skirt). That's also a mostly male dominated industry but he's paid for his skill & knowledge. I appreciate what you are saying though, rather they had the option though x

And for gods sake don’t start with this “they might not identify as a boy when they are older” bollocks

They may dress like a girl if they wish...but guess what, no matter how much surgery they have, biologically they are still a boy!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/09/2019 21:01

Makes me think of an old black man.

MrsMyreton · 18/09/2019 21:02

I love it OP.

Reminds me of a character from one of my fave books, 'My Cousin Rachel'.

Yeahsurewhatever · 18/09/2019 21:05

October I know several girls called Theo/Theodore/Theodora to be fair

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/09/2019 21:05

Ah to follow on from my last comment... that'll be because of that show Desmond's about the hairdressers in Peckham that used to be on the telly in the 80's/90's 🤣

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 21:05

@Yeahsurewhatever Same :/

I love it.
There was a radio presenter called Ambrose Harcourt.
I don't think it needs a nickname but I suppose it'd be Am or Bro.

Penelopeeeeee · 18/09/2019 21:07

Theodora is a girls’ name though because it’s the female version of Theodore..you can’t say ‘oh Joseph is a feminine name because I know a girl named Josephine’

his boss is a cross dresser & makes 500K+ per year & only goes by his female name at work (also wears a skirt)
OP, I commend you. You had us for a while. Now we see you’re just trolling us but it was fun while it lasted.

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 21:12

@Penelopeeeeee nope?

Joeybee · 18/09/2019 21:12

I do immediately associate it with Ambrosia Rice Pudding tbh.
It's not a bad name though if you don't have that association, and people would forget that when they get to know the baby.
It sounds modern and fresh, I think it also sounds quite elegant too. There's no obvious nickname potential though, which for me wouldn't be a good thing.
If you like it, go for it.

QueenofPain · 18/09/2019 21:17

Ambrose is a lovely boys name, but not for the basic at heart. There might be a spate of them after the awesome Ambrose character in Sabrina recently, though.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/09/2019 21:17

I don’t like sorry. It’s like a hybrid of two very girly names Amber and Rose.
I don’t think a 15 year old boy (which he will be one day) would thAnkyou for that name

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 21:19

@Penelopeeeeee He works for an Ai machine learning company, they created ai for the big 5 x

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 21:37

Well i think we can all agree it's quite a marmite name 🤣! Thanks for the input everyone :) x

Gabrielle is feminine whilst Gabriel is masculine
Theodore is definitely masculine. Theodora is feminine.
Ambrose is masculine too.

Why would you be thinking a child would need a gender neutral name in case they decide to be transgender at some time in the future?
Calling a boy Bella and popping him into pink skirts to prove you’re all accepting is much more likely to create problems in the future than calling him a traditional boys name and putting him in shorts.

Lalafelpotato · 18/09/2019 22:14

What are some on these comments 🤣 it's like the 1940's up in here 🤣

I have a Thomas Ambrose, we came very close to making it his first name though!

I love it (of course I'm biased), and it was DHs grandfathers first name.

Tillygetsit · 18/09/2019 22:38

I love the name Bram and Ambrose doesnt seem far off that. I like it but probably wouldnt be brave enough to use it.

ParanoidGynodroid · 18/09/2019 22:38

Weird comments on here. Ambrose is not gender neutral, and Gabriel and Theodore are not feminine.

All three are male names.

violetswordfish · 18/09/2019 22:47

Ambrose is a lovely name. As long as your last name isn't Wilson.

My DS is called Emrys. I love it. He loves it because its Merlin's real name 😊

LiveatCityHall · 18/09/2019 23:45

Sorry. I know you didn't ask for thoughts on Emrys but I just love it and wanted to put it out there as an alternative
