Row as in boat or even like ROman?

wibbletooth · 16/09/2019 20:46

@Mumoftwox Guessing that that the Ro as in boar adds a whole divergent dimension again - Roar-an maybe? Complete with a really big roar GrinGrinGrin

Mumoftwox · 16/09/2019 20:48

I have a Rowan in my class and Row rhymes with cow. I'd always thought it came from rowan as in tree which rhymes with cow iyswim

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/09/2019 21:11

As in boat .

Pootle40 · 16/09/2019 21:16

My son is called Rowan. In Scotland it is said to rhyme with 'cow-an'. In England it is 'row-an'.

Pootle40 · 16/09/2019 21:18

In Scotland we have Rowan trees (cow). In England you have Rowan trees (row).

bridgetreilly · 16/09/2019 21:56

The rowan tree is pronounced to rhyme with cow-an. But as a person's name I've only ever heard it to rhyme with low-an.

daisypond · 17/09/2019 08:09

Rowan tree isn’t necessarily pronounced to rhyme with cow-an. That’s a variant pronunciation. It’s valid, but the other way is more common and is the first pronunciation in the dictionary.

BertrandRussell · 17/09/2019 08:11

There’s distinct Scottish and English pronunciation of the tree- so also he name.

Bitchfeatures · 17/09/2019 08:12

Row -as in row a boat- Un

I know a male and female Rowan and both pronounced that way.
I love the name, especially for a girl.

Relationshipsajoke · 17/09/2019 08:17

Row your boat

Grufallosfriends · 17/09/2019 10:11

To row (argue) an

FizzyGreenWater · 18/09/2019 11:43

Row your boat in England, Row to rhyme with cow in Scotland.

This. Where are you? Sounds like you've picked the pronunciation which doesn't fit your region.

foxtiger · 20/09/2019 11:38

Interesting. I pronounce both the name and the tree as in row your boat. I had no idea it could be pronounced another way and don't like it as much like that.

I'd assume Roan to have one syllable and would instinctively pronounce the H in Rohan (I have met someone, I think Indian, with that name pronounced with the H).

flowery · 20/09/2019 11:42

My 12yo is Rowan, as in row your boat. I am aware that in Scotland the name is usually pronounced to rhyme with cow.

Rohan I would pronounce slightly differently, still rhyming with row your boat but with a soft h instead of the w.

If I saw Roan I wouldn’t be sure- my instinct would obviously be to rhyme it with moan and loan, but I would wonder if the family meant it to be like Rowan or Rohan so I would ask.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 20/09/2019 11:45

Rowan (row your boat) for a boy.
Rowan ( as in cow) for a girl.
