We are considering the name Finlay for our DC. We like it pronounced Fin-lee, but our family think it should be pronounced Fin-lay.

I’ve genuinely never heard fin-Lee ever. I’m Scottish but in a very Anglo city.

pumkinspicetime · 16/09/2019 18:47

Fin lay, I've not noticed another way of saying it.
I am Scots but have lived all over.

Biancadelrioisback · 16/09/2019 18:54

I'm from NE and would say fin-lee

Goldensummer · 16/09/2019 18:57

But bath and ba..r.th still make sense though because the "r" isn't being pronounced as an "r" it is being produced as an "ahh."

B..ahh..th.

Pronouncing finley as fin-Lay makes no sense because the "e" in finley has no way of even sounding like an "a."

Grufallosfriends · 16/09/2019 19:02

Finley- Fin lee

Finlay - Fin lay

Grufallosfriends · 16/09/2019 19:03

there’s no “r” in bath but many people still say insert one when they pronounce it.

I've never heard anyone call in Barth! Hmm

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/09/2019 19:04

Fintan is quite a nice "Fin" name too op.

Fin Lay, I'd have said. As a surname in Ireland, spelled Finlay is said that way.

Ninkaninus · 16/09/2019 20:08

I’ve only ever heard it pronounced closer to the ee sound, for both spellings. I live in the south.

Annaskies · 16/09/2019 20:09

Definitely Fin-lee here, I only heard Fin-lay for the first time on a programme recently and thought it sounded odd!

Bookworm4 · 16/09/2019 20:10

It’s a Scottish name and it’s Fin lay, Fin lee is laughable.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 16/09/2019 20:10

Finlay.

AverageMummy · 16/09/2019 20:13

Fin-lee I’m from the SE if that makes a difference

DramaFarmer · 16/09/2019 20:14

Finnly

Like thinly.

Never ever heard it pronounced fin-lay.

TheGlaikitRambler · 16/09/2019 20:15

It's Scottish and it's Fin-Lay

7Worfs · 16/09/2019 20:16

I have a Finley. We didn’t register him for a month because we kept overthinking the spelling. DH wanted it pronounced Fin Lee so insisted on that spelling.
And then our lovely Scottish neighbour inquired after our boy Findlay Grin It sounds lovely in her accent so I won’t be correcting her

whiteroseredrose · 16/09/2019 20:22

Fin li

ClaraThePigeon · 16/09/2019 20:23

Fin-Lay
